1That set off a terrific persecution of the church in Jerusalem. The believers were all scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. All, that is, but the apostles.
AMP
1Saul wholeheartedly approved of Stephen's death. And on that day a great and relentless persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem; and the believers were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.
MSG
2Good and brave men buried Stephen, giving him a solemn funeral—not many dry eyes that day!
AMP
2Some devout men buried Stephen, and mourned greatly over him .
MSG
3And Saul just went wild, devastating the church, entering house after house after house, dragging men and women off to jail.
AMP
3But Saul began ravaging the church ; entering house after house and dragging off men and women, putting them in prison.
MSG
4Forced to leave home base, the Christians all became missionaries. Wherever they were scattered, they preached the Message about Jesus.
AMP
4Now those who had been scattered went from place to place preaching the word .
MSG
5Going down to a Samaritan city, Philip proclaimed the Message of the Messiah.
AMP
5Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) to them.
MSG
6When the people heard what he had to say and saw the miracles, the clear signs of God's action, they hung on his every word.
AMP
6The crowds gathered and were paying close attention to everything Philip said, as they heard and saw the signs which he was doing .
MSG
7Many who could neither stand nor walk were healed that day. The evil spirits protested loudly as they were sent on their way.
AMP
7For unclean spirits (demons), shouting loudly, were coming out of many who were possessed; and many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed.
MSG
8And what joy in the city!
AMP
8So there was great rejoicing in that city.
MSG
9Previous to Philip's arrival, a certain Simon had practiced magic in the city, posing as a famous man and dazzling all the Samaritans with his wizardry.
AMP
9Now there was a man named Simon, who previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great.
MSG
10He had them all, from little children to old men, eating out of his hand. They all thought he had supernatural powers, and called him "the Great Wizard."
AMP
10They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is what is called the Great Power of God!"
MSG
11He had been around a long time and everyone was more or less in awe of him.
AMP
11They were paying attention to him because for a long time he had mystified and dazzled them with his magic.
MSG
12But when Philip came to town announcing the news of God's kingdom and proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ, they forgot Simon and were baptized, becoming believers right and left!
AMP
12But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, both men and women.
MSG
13Even Simon himself believed and was baptized. From that moment he was like Philip's shadow, so fascinated with all the God-signs and miracles that he wouldn't leave Philip's side.
AMP
13Even Simon believed ; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he watched the attesting signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.
MSG
14When the apostles in Jerusalem received the report that Samaria had accepted God's Message, they sent Peter and John down
AMP
14When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.
MSG
15to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit.
AMP
15They came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit;
MSG
16Up to this point they had only been baptized in the name of the Master Jesus; the Holy Spirit hadn't yet fallen on them.
AMP
16for He had not yet fallen on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus .
MSG
17Then the apostles laid their hands on them and they did receive the Holy Spirit.
AMP
17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them , and they received the Holy Spirit.
MSG
18When Simon saw that the apostles by merely laying on hands conferred the Spirit, he pulled out his money, excited,
AMP
18Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,
MSG
19and said, "Sell me your secret! Show me how you did that! How much do you want? Name your price!"
AMP
19saying, "Give me this authority and power too, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
MSG
20Peter said, "To hell with your money! And you along with it. Why, that's unthinkable—trying to buy God's gift!
AMP
20But Peter said to him, "May your money be destroyed along with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
MSG
21You'll never be part of what God is doing by striking bargains and offering bribes.
AMP
21You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart (motive, purpose) is not right before God.
MSG
22Change your ways—and now! Ask the Master to forgive you for trying to use God to make money.
AMP
22So repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, this thought of your heart may be forgiven you.
MSG
23I can see this is an old habit with you; you reek with money-lust."
AMP
23For I see that you are provoked by bitterness and bound by sin."
MSG
24"Oh!" said Simon, "pray for me! Pray to the Master that nothing like that will ever happen to me!"
AMP
24But Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me both of you, so that nothing of what you have said will come upon me."
MSG
25And with that, the apostles were on their way, continuing to witness and spread the Message of God's salvation, preaching in every Samaritan town they passed through on their return to Jerusalem.
AMP
25So, when Peter and John had given their testimony and preached the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, preaching the good news in many Samaritan villages .
MSG
26Later God's angel spoke to Philip: "At noon today I want you to walk over to that desolate road that goes from Jerusalem down to Gaza."
AMP
26But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Get up and go south to the road that runs from Jerusalem down to Gaza." (This is a desert road).
MSG
27He got up and went. He met an Ethiopian eunuch coming down the road. The eunuch had been on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and was returning to Ethiopia, where he was minister in charge of all the finances of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians.
AMP
27So he got up and went; and there was an Ethiopian eunuch , a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship,
MSG
28He was riding in a chariot and reading the prophet Isaiah.
AMP
28and he was returning, and sitting in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
MSG
29The Spirit told Philip, "Climb into the chariot."
AMP
29Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot."
MSG
30Running up alongside, Philip heard the eunuch reading Isaiah and asked, "Do you understand what you're reading?"
AMP
30Philip ran up and heard the man reading the prophet Isaiah, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"
MSG
31He answered, "How can I without some help?" and invited Philip into the chariot with him.
AMP
31And he said, "Well, how could I unless someone guides me ?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
MSG
32The passage he was reading was this: As a sheep led to slaughter, and quiet as a lamb being sheared, He was silent, saying nothing.
AMP
32Now this was the passage of Scripture which he was reading: "Like a sheep He was led to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He does not open His mouth.
MSG
33He was mocked and put down, never got a fair trial. But who now can count his kin since he's been taken from the earth?
AMP
33"In humiliation His judgment was taken away . Who will describe His generation? For His life is taken from the earth."
MSG
34The eunuch said, "Tell me, who is the prophet talking about: himself or some other?"
AMP
34The eunuch replied to Philip, "Please tell me, about whom does the prophet say this? About himself or about someone else?"
MSG
35Philip grabbed his chance. Using this passage as his text, he preached Jesus to him.
AMP
35Then Philip spoke and beginning with this Scripture he preached Jesus to him .
MSG
36As they continued down the road, they came to a stream of water. The eunuch said, "Here's water. Why can't I be baptized?"
AMP
36As they continued along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch exclaimed, "Look! Water! What forbids me from being baptized?"
MSG
38He ordered the chariot to stop. They both went down to the water, and Philip baptized him on the spot.
AMP
38And he ordered that the chariot be stopped; and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
MSG
39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of God suddenly took Philip off, and that was the last the eunuch saw of him. But he didn't mind. He had what he'd come for and went on down the road as happy as he could be.
AMP
39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away ; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but he went on his way rejoicing.
MSG
40Philip showed up in Azotus and continued north, preaching the Message in all the villages along that route until he arrived at Caesarea.
AMP
40But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the good news to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea .
