1King Belshazzar held a great feast for his one thousand nobles. The wine flowed freely.

1O rei Belsazar deu um grande banquete a mil dos seus grandes e bebeu vinho na presença dos mil.

2Belshazzar, heady with the wine, ordered that the gold and silver chalices his father Nebuchadnezzar had stolen from God's Temple of Jerusalem be brought in so that he and his nobles, his wives and concubines, could drink from them.

2Havendo Belsazar provado o vinho, mandou trazer os utensílios de ouro e de prata que Nabucodonosor, seu pai, tinha tirado do templo que estava em Jerusalém, para que bebessem neles o rei, os seus grandes e as suas mulheres e concubinas.

3When the gold and silver chalices were brought in, the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, drank wine from them.

4They drank the wine and drunkenly praised their gods made of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone.

5At that very moment, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began writing on the lamp-illumined, whitewashed wall of the palace. When the king saw the disembodied hand writing away,

6he went white as a ghost, scared out of his wits. His legs went limp and his knees knocked.

6Então, se mudou o semblante do rei, e os seus pensamentos o turbaram; as juntas dos seus lombos se relaxaram, e os seus joelhos bateram um no outro.

7He yelled out for the enchanters, the fortunetellers, and the diviners to come. He told these Babylonian magi, "Anyone who can read this writing on the wall and tell me what it means will be famous and rich—purple robe, the great gold chain—and be third-in-command in the kingdom."

7E ordenou o rei, com força, que se introduzissem os astrólogos, os caldeus e os adivinhadores; e falou o rei e disse aos sábios de Babilônia: Qualquer que ler esta escritura e me declarar a sua interpretação será vestido de púrpura, e trará uma cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e será, no reino, o terceiro dominador.

8One after the other they tried, but could make no sense of it. They could neither read what was written nor interpret it to the king.

8Então, entraram todos os sábios do rei; mas não puderam ler a escritura, nem fazer saber ao rei a sua interpretação.

9So now the king was really frightened. All the blood drained from his face. The nobles were in a panic.

9Então, o rei Belsazar perturbou-se muito, e mudou-se nele o seu semblante; e os seus grandes estavam sobressaltados.

10The queen heard of the hysteria among the king and his nobles and came to the banquet hall. She said, "Long live the king! Don't be upset. Don't sit around looking like ghosts.

10A rainha, por causa das palavras do rei e dos seus grandes, entrou na casa do banquete; e falou a rainha e disse: Ó rei, vive eternamente! Não te turbem os teus pensamentos, nem se mude o teu semblante.

11There is a man in your kingdom who is full of the divine Holy Spirit. During your father's time he was well known for his intellectual brilliance and spiritual wisdom. He was so good that your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him the head of all the magicians, enchanters, fortunetellers, and diviners.

11Há no teu reino um homem que tem o espírito dos deuses santos; e nos dias de teu pai se achou nele luz, e inteligência, e sabedoria, como a sabedoria dos deuses; e teu pai, o rei Nabucodonosor, sim, teu pai, ó rei, o constituiu chefe dos magos, dos astrólogos, dos caldeus e dos adivinhadores.

12There was no one quite like him. He could do anything—interpret dreams, solve mysteries, explain puzzles. His name is Daniel, but he was renamed Belteshazzar by the king. Have Daniel called in. He'll tell you what is going on here."

12Porquanto se achou neste Daniel um espírito excelente, e ciência, e entendimento, interpretando sonhos, e explicando enigmas, e solvendo dúvidas, ao qual o rei pôs o nome de Beltessazar; chame-se, pois, agora Daniel, e ele dará interpretação.

13So Daniel was called in. The king asked him, "Are you the Daniel who was one of the Jewish exiles my father brought here from Judah?

13Então, Daniel foi introduzido à presença do rei. Falou o rei e disse a Daniel: És tu aquele Daniel, dos cativos de Judá, que o rei, meu pai, trouxe de Judá?

14I've heard about you—that you're full of the Holy Spirit, that you've got a brilliant mind, that you are incredibly wise.

14Tenho ouvido dizer a teu respeito que o espírito dos deuses está em ti e que a luz, e o entendimento, e a excelente sabedoria se acham em ti.

15The wise men and enchanters were brought in here to read this writing on the wall and interpret it for me. They couldn't figure it out—not a word, not a syllable.

15Acabam de ser introduzidos à minha presença os sábios e os astrólogos, para lerem esta escritura, e me fazerem saber a sua interpretação; mas não puderam dar a interpretação destas palavras.

16But I've heard that you interpret dreams and solve mysteries. So—if you can read the writing and interpret it for me, you'll be rich and famous—a purple robe, the great gold chain around your neck—and third-in-command in the kingdom."

16Eu, porém, tenho ouvido dizer de ti que podes dar interpretações e solver dúvidas; agora, se puderes ler esta escritura e fazer-me saber a sua interpretação, serás vestido de púrpura, e terás cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e no reino serás o terceiro dominador.

17Daniel answered the king, "You can keep your gifts, or give them to someone else. But I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

17Então, respondeu Daniel e disse na presença do rei: As tuas dádivas fiquem contigo, e dá os teus presentes a outro; todavia, lerei ao rei a escritura e lhe farei saber a interpretação.

18"Listen, O king! The High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar a great kingdom and a glorious reputation.

18Ó rei! Deus, o Altíssimo, deu a Nabucodonosor, teu pai, o reino, e a grandeza, e a glória, e a magnificência.

19Because God made him so famous, people from everywhere, whatever their race, color, and creed, were totally intimidated by him. He killed or spared people on whim. He promoted or humiliated people capriciously.

19E, por causa da grandeza que lhe deu, todos os povos, nações e línguas tremiam e temiam diante dele; a quem queria matava e a quem queria dava a vida; e a quem queria engrandecia e a quem queria abatia.

20He developed a big head and a hard spirit. Then God knocked him off his high horse and stripped him of his fame.

20Mas, quando o seu coração se exalçou e o seu espírito se endureceu em soberba, foi derribado do seu trono real, e passou dele a sua glória.

21He was thrown out of human company, lost his mind, and lived like a wild animal. He ate grass like an ox and was soaked by heaven's dew until he learned his lesson: that the High God rules human kingdoms and puts anyone he wants in charge.

21E foi tirado dentre os filhos dos homens, e o seu coração foi feito semelhante ao dos animais, e a sua morada foi com os jumentos monteses; fizeram-no comer erva como os bois, e pelo orvalho do céu foi molhado o seu corpo, até que conheceu que Deus, o Altíssimo, tem domínio sobre os reinos dos homens e a quem quer constitui sobre eles.

22"You are his son and have known all this, yet you're as arrogant as he ever was.

22E tu, seu filho Belsazar, não humilhaste o teu coração, ainda que soubeste de tudo isso.

23Look at you, setting yourself up in competition against the Master of heaven! You had the sacred chalices from his Temple brought into your drunken party so that you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines, could drink from them. You used the sacred chalices to toast your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone—blind, deaf, and imbecile gods. But you treat with contempt the living God who holds your entire life from birth to death in his hand.

23E te levantaste contra o Senhor do céu, pois foram trazidos os utensílios da casa dele perante ti, e tu, os teus grandes, as tuas mulheres e as tuas concubinas bebestes vinho neles; além disso, deste louvores aos deuses de prata, de ouro, de cobre, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra, que não veem, não ouvem, nem sabem; mas a Deus, em cuja mão está a tua vida e todos os teus caminhos, a ele não glorificaste.

24"God sent the hand that wrote on the wall,

24Então, dele foi enviada aquela parte da mão, e escreveu-se esta escritura.

25and this is what is written: mene, teqel, and peres.

25Esta, pois, é a escritura que se escreveu: MENE, MENE, TEQUEL e PARSIM.

26This is what the words mean:"Mene: God has numbered the days of your rule and they don't add up.

26Esta é a interpretação daquilo: MENE: Contou Deus o teu reino e o acabou.

27"Teqel: You have been weighed on the scales and you don't weigh much.

27TEQUEL: Pesado foste na balança e foste achado em falta.

28"Peres: Your kingdom has been divided up and handed over to the Medes and Persians."

28PERES: Dividido foi o teu reino e deu-se aos medos e aos persas.

29Belshazzar did what he had promised. He robed Daniel in purple, draped the great gold chain around his neck, and promoted him to third-in-charge in the kingdom.

29Então, mandou Belsazar que vestissem Daniel de púrpura, e que lhe pusessem uma cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e proclamassem a respeito dele que havia de ser o terceiro dominador do reino.

30That same night the Babylonian king Belshazzar was murdered.

30Naquela mesma noite, foi morto Belsazar, rei dos caldeus.

31He was sixty-two years old. Darius the Mede succeeded him as king.
