1Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.Attention, Earth, I've got a mouth full of words.

1Give ear, you heavens, and I will speak. Let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

2My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain,my words arrive like morning dew,Like a sprinkling rain on new grass,like spring showers on the garden.

2My doctrine will drop as the rain. My speech will condense as the dew, as the misty rain on the tender grass, as the showers on the herb.

3For it's God's Name I'm preaching—respond to the greatness of our God!

3For I will proclaim Yahweh’s name. Ascribe greatness to our God!

4The Rock: His works are perfect,and the way he works is fair and just;A God you can depend upon, no exceptions,a straight-arrow God.

4The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he.

5His messed-up, mixed-up children, his non-children,throw mud at him but none of it sticks.

5They have dealt corruptly with him. They are not his children, because of their defect. They are a perverse and crooked generation.

6Don't you realize it is God you are treating like this?This is crazy; don't you have any sense of reverence?Isn't this your father who created you,who made you and gave you a place on Earth?

6Is this the way you repay Yahweh, foolish and unwise people? Isn’t he your father who has bought you? He has made you and established you.

7Read up on what happened before you were born;dig into the past, understand your roots.Ask your parents what it was like before you were born;ask the old-ones, they'll tell you a thing or two.

7Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

8When the High God gave the nations their stake,gave them their place on Earth,He put each of the peoples within boundariesunder the care of divine guardians.

8When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the children of men, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel.

9But God himself took charge of his people,took Jacob on as his personal concern.

9For Yahweh’s portion is his people. Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

10He found him out in the wilderness,in an empty, windswept wasteland.He threw his arms around him, lavished attention on him,guarding him as the apple of his eye.

10He found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. He surrounded him. He cared for him. He kept him as the apple of his eye.

11He was like an eagle hovering over its nest,overshadowing its young,Then spreading its wings, lifting them into the air,teaching them to fly.

11As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, he spread abroad his wings, he took them, he bore them on his feathers.

12God alone led him;there was not a foreign god in sight.

13God lifted him on to the hilltops,so he could feast on the crops in the fields.He fed him honey from the rock,oil from granite crags,

13He made him ride on the high places of the earth. He ate the increase of the field. He caused him to suck honey out of the rock, oil out of the flinty rock;

14Curds of cattle and the milk of sheep,the choice cuts of lambs and goats,Fine Bashan rams, high-quality wheat,and the blood of grapes: you drank good wine!

14butter from the herd, and milk from the flock, with fat of lambs, rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat. From the blood of the grape, you drank wine.

15Jeshurun put on weight and bucked;you got fat, became obese, a tub of lard.He abandoned the God who made him,he mocked the Rock of his salvation.

15But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation.

16They made him jealous with their foreign newfangled gods,and with obscenities they vexed him no end.

16They moved him to jealousy with strange gods. They provoked him to anger with abominations.

17They sacrificed to no-god demons,gods they knew nothing about,The latest in gods, fresh from the market,gods your ancestors would never call "gods."

17They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they didn’t know, to new gods that came up recently, which your fathers didn’t dread.

18You walked out on the Rock who gave you your life,forgot the birth-God who brought you into the world.

18Of the Rock who became your father, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God who gave you birth.

19God saw it and turned on his heel,angered and hurt by his sons and daughters.

19Yahweh saw and abhorred, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters.

20He said, "From now on I'm looking the other way.Wait and see what happens to them.Oh, they're a turned-around, upside-down generation!Who knows what they'll do from one moment to the next?

20He said, “I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

21They've goaded me with their no-gods,infuriated me with their hot-air gods;I'm going to goad them with a no-people,with a hollow nation incense them.

21They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God. They have provoked me to anger with their vanities. I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

22My anger started a fire,a wildfire burning deep down in Sheol,Then shooting up and devouring the Earth and its crops,setting all the mountains, from bottom to top, on fire.

22For a fire is kindled in my anger, that burns to the lowest Sheol, devours the earth with its increase, and sets the foundations of the mountains on fire.

23I'll pile catastrophes on them,I'll shoot my arrows at them:

23“I will heap evils on them. I will spend my arrows on them.

24Starvation, blistering heat, killing disease;I'll send snarling wild animals to attack from the forestand venomous creatures to strike from the dust.

24They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat and bitter destruction. I will send the teeth of animals on them, with the venom of vipers that glide in the dust.

25Killing in the streets,terror in the houses,Young men and virgins alike struck down,and yes, breast-feeding babies and gray-haired old men."

25Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror; on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man.

26I could have said, "I'll hack them to pieces,wipe out all trace of them from the Earth,"

26I said that I would scatter them afar. I would make their memory to cease from among men;

27Except that I feared the enemy would grab the chanceto take credit for all of it,Crowing, "Look what we did!God had nothing to do with this."

27were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, ‘Our hand is exalted, Yahweh has not done all this.’”

28They are a nation of ninnies,they don't know enough to come in out of the rain.

28For they are a nation void of counsel. There is no understanding in them.

29If they had any sense at all, they'd know this;they would see what's coming down the road.

30How could one soldier chase a thousand enemies off,or two men run off two thousand,Unless their Rock had sold them,unless God had given them away?

31For their rock is nothing compared to our Rock;even our enemies say that.

32They're a vine that comes right out of Sodom,who they are is rooted in Gomorrah;Their grapes are poison grapes,their grape-clusters bitter.

33Their wine is rattlesnake venom,mixed with lethal cobra poison.

34Don't you realize that I have my shelveswell stocked, locked behind iron doors?

34“Isn’t this laid up in store with me, sealed up among my treasures?

35I'm in charge of vengeance and payback,just waiting for them to slip up;And the day of their doom is just around the corner,sudden and swift and sure.

35Vengeance is mine, and recompense, at the time when their foot slides; for the day of their calamity is at hand. Their doom rushes at them.”

36Yes, God will judge his people,but oh how compassionately he'll do it.When he sees their weakened plightand there is no one left, slave or free,

36For Yahweh will judge his people, and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone; that there is no one remaining, shut up or left at large.

37He'll say, "So where are their gods,the rock in which they sought refuge,

37He will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge;

38The gods who feasted on the fat of their sacrificesand drank the wine of their drink-offerings?Let them show their stuff and help you,let them give you a hand!

38which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you! Let them be your protection.

39"Do you see it now? Do you see that I'm the one?Do you see that there's no other god beside me?I bring death and I give life, I wound and I heal—there is no getting away from or around me!

39“See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

40I raise my hand in solemn oath;I say, 'I'm always around. By that very life I promise:

41When I sharpen my lightning swordand execute judgment,I take vengeance on my enemiesand pay back those who hate me.

41if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.

42I'll make my arrows drunk with blood,my sword will gorge itself on flesh,Feasting on slain and captive alike,the proud and vain enemy corpses.' "

43Celebrate, nations, join the praise of his people.He avenges the deaths of his servants,Pays back his enemies with vengeance,and cleanses his land for his people.

43Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants. He will take vengeance on his adversaries, and will make atonement for his land and for his people.

46he said, "Take to heart all these words to which I give witness today and urgently command your children to put them into practice, every single word of this Revelation.

46He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

47Yes. This is no small matter for you; it's your life. In keeping this word you'll have a good and long life in this land that you're crossing the Jordan to possess."

47For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it.”

48That same day God spoke to Moses:

49"Climb the Abarim Mountains to Mount Nebo in the land of Moab, overlooking Jericho, and view the land of Canaan that I'm giving the People of Israel to have and hold.

49“Go up into this mountain of Abarim, to Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is across from Jericho; and see the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel for a possession.

50Die on the mountain that you climb and join your people in the ground, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and joined his people.

51"This is because you broke faith with me in the company of the People of Israel at the Waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin—you didn't honor my Holy Presence in the company of the People of Israel.

51because you trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah of Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you didn’t uphold my holiness among the children of Israel.

52You'll look at the land spread out before you but you won't enter it, this land that I am giving to the People of Israel."

52For you shall see the land from a distance; but you shall not go there into the land which I give the children of Israel.”
