MSG
1There's nothing better than being wise,Knowing how to interpret the meaning of life.Wisdom puts light in the eyes,And gives gentleness to words and manners.
WEB
1Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.
MSG
2Do what your king commands; you gave a sacred oath of obedience.
WEB
2I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.
MSG
3Don't worryingly second-guess your orders or try to back out when the task is unpleasant. You're serving his pleasure, not yours.
WEB
3Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,
MSG
4The king has the last word. Who dares say to him, "What are you doing?"
WEB
4for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him, “What are you doing?”
MSG
5Carrying out orders won't hurt you a bit; the wise person obeys promptly and accurately.
WEB
5Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.
MSG
6Yes, there's a right time and way for everything, even though, unfortunately, we miss it for the most part.
WEB
6For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him.
MSG
7It's true that no one knows what's going to happen, or when. Who's around to tell us?
WEB
7For he doesn’t know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?
MSG
8No one can control the wind or lock it in a box.No one has any say-so regarding the day of death. No one can stop a battle in its tracks. No one who does evil can be saved by evil.
WEB
8There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.
MSG
9All this I observed as I tried my best to understand all that's going on in this world. As long as men and women have the power to hurt each other, this is the way it is.
WEB
9All this I have seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.
MSG
10One time I saw wicked men given a solemn burial in holy ground. When the people returned to the city, they delivered flowery eulogies—and in the very place where wicked acts were done by those very men! More smoke. Indeed.
WEB
10So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.
MSG
11Because the sentence against evil deeds is so long in coming, people in general think they can get by with murder.
WEB
11Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
MSG
12Even though a person sins and gets by with it hundreds of times throughout a long life, I'm still convinced that the good life is reserved for the person who fears God, who lives reverently in his presence,
WEB
12Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.
MSG
13and that the evil person will not experience a "good" life. No matter how many days he lives, they'll all be as flat and colorless as a shadow—because he doesn't fear God.
WEB
13But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow; because he doesn’t fear God.
MSG
14Here's something that happens all the time and makes no sense at all: Good people get what's coming to the wicked, and bad people get what's coming to the good. I tell you, this makes no sense. It's smoke.
WEB
14There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
MSG
15So, I'm all for just going ahead and having a good time—the best possible. The only earthly good men and women can look forward to is to eat and drink well and have a good time—compensation for the struggle for survival these few years God gives us on earth.
WEB
15Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.
MSG
16When I determined to load up on wisdom and examine everything taking place on earth, I realized that if you keep your eyes open day and night without even blinking,
WEB
16When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes),
MSG
17you'll still never figure out the meaning of what God is doing on this earth. Search as hard as you like, you're not going to make sense of it. No matter how smart you are, you won't get to the bottom of it.
WEB
17then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.
