1Some time later, King Xerxes promoted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, making him the highest-ranking official in the government.

1Depois disso, o rei Xerxes honrou Hamã, filho de Hamedata, descendente de Agague, e o promoveu, dando-lhe posição acima de todos os príncipes que estavam com ele.

2All the king's servants at the King's Gate used to honor him by bowing down and kneeling before Haman—that's what the king had commanded.Except Mordecai. Mordecai wouldn't do it, wouldn't bow down and kneel.

2E todos os que serviam o rei, que estavam à porta do palácio real, se inclinavam e se prostravam diante de Hamã, pois o rei tinha dado essa ordem a seu respeito. Porém Mardoqueu não se inclinava nem se prostrava diante dele.

3The king's servants at the King's Gate asked Mordecai about it: "Why do you cross the king's command?"

3Então os que serviam o rei, que estavam à porta do palácio real, disseram a Mardoqueu: Por que desobedeces à ordem do rei?

4Day after day they spoke to him about this but he wouldn't listen, so they went to Haman to see whether something shouldn't be done about it. Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.

4E, visto que lhe diziam isso dia após dia e que ele não lhes dava ouvidos, foram contar isso a Hamã, para ver se o procedimento de Mardoqueu seria tolerado, pois ele lhes tinha dito que era judeu.

5When Haman saw for himself that Mordecai didn't bow down and kneel before him, he was outraged.

5Quando Hamã viu que Mardoqueu não se inclinava nem se prostrava diante dele, ficou muito irado.

6Meanwhile, having learned that Mordecai was a Jew, Haman hated to waste his fury on just one Jew; he looked for a way to eliminate not just Mordecai but all Jews throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.

6Mas, quando soube a que povo pertencia, achou pouco tirar a vida somente dele. Por esse motivo, Hamã procurou uma forma de exterminar todos os judeus, povo de Mardoqueu, que estavam em todo o reino de Xerxes.

7In the first month, the month of Nisan, of the twelfth year of Xerxes, the pur—that is, the lot—was cast under Haman's charge to determine the propitious day and month. The lot turned up the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.

7No primeiro mês, que é o mês de nisã, do décimo segundo ano do rei Xerxes, lançaram o pur, isto é, a sorte, diante de Hamã, para saber o dia e o mês do extermínio. E caiu no décimo segundo mês, o mês de adar.

8Haman then spoke with King Xerxes: "There is an odd set of people scattered through the provinces of your kingdom who don't fit in. Their customs and ways are different from those of everybody else. Worse, they disregard the king's laws. They're an affront; the king shouldn't put up with them.

8E Hamã disse ao rei Xerxes: Existe um povo espalhado e disperso entre os povos em todas as províncias do teu reino cujas leis são diferentes das leis de todos os povos, e que não obedece às leis do rei. Por isso, não convém ao rei tolerá-lo.

9If it please the king, let orders be given that they be destroyed. I'll pay for it myself. I'll deposit 375 tons of silver in the royal bank to finance the operation."

9Se for do agrado do rei, decrete-se que sejam exterminados, e eu depositarei dez mil talentos de prata na tesouraria do reino para os encarregados desse trabalho.

10The king slipped his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, archenemy of the Jews.

10Então o rei tirou do dedo seu anel de selar e o deu a Hamã, filho de Hamedata, descendente de Agague, inimigo dos judeus.

11"Go ahead," the king said to Haman. "It's your money—do whatever you want with those people."

11E o rei disse a Hamã: Recebe esta prata e faze com este povo o que achares melhor.

12The king's secretaries were brought in on the thirteenth day of the first month. The orders were written out word for word as Haman had addressed them to the king's satraps, the governors of every province, and the officials of every people. They were written in the script of each province and the language of each people in the name of King Xerxes and sealed with the royal signet ring.

12Então, no décimo terceiro dia do primeiro mês, foram chamados os secretários do rei, e Hamã ordenou que escrevessem cartas aos sátrapas do rei e aos governadores que havia sobre todas as províncias e aos príncipes de todos os povos, de acordo com a escrita de cada província e na língua de cada povo. Tudo foi escrito em nome do rei Xerxes e selado com o anel do rei.

13Bulletins were sent out by couriers to all the king's provinces with orders to massacre, kill, and eliminate all the Jews—youngsters and old men, women and babies—on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month Adar, and to plunder their goods.

13As cartas foram enviadas por mensageiros a todas as províncias do rei, com a ordem de eliminar, matar e exterminar todos os judeus, jovens e idosos, crianças e mulheres, e de saquear os seus bens, num único dia, o décimo terceiro dia do décimo segundo mês, o mês de adar.

14Copies of the bulletin were to be posted in each province, publicly available to all peoples, to get them ready for that day.

15At the king's command, the couriers took off; the order was also posted in the palace complex of Susa. The king and Haman sat back and had a drink while the city of Susa reeled from the news.

15Os mensageiros saíram às pressas para cumprir a ordem do rei, e o decreto foi proclamado na cidadela de Susã. Então o rei e Hamã se assentaram para beber, mas a cidade de Susã estava alvoroçada.
