1Job answered:
NABRE
1Then Job answered and said:
MSG
2"I'm sure you speak for all the experts, and when you die there'll be no one left to tell us how to live.
NABRE
2No doubt you are the peoplewith whom wisdom shall die!
MSG
3But don't forget that I also have a brain—I don't intend to play second fiddle to you.It doesn't take an expert to know these things.
NABRE
3But I have intelligence as well as you; I do not fall short of you;for who does not know such things as these?
MSG
4"I'm ridiculed by my friends:'So that's the man who had conversations with God!'Ridiculed without mercy:'Look at the man who never did wrong!'
NABRE
4I have become the sport of my neighbors: "The one whom God answers when he calls upon him,The just, the perfect man," is a laughingstock;
MSG
5It's easy for the well-to-do to point their fingers in blame, for the well-fixed to pour scorn on the strugglers.
NABRE
5The undisturbed esteem my downfall a disgracesuch as awaits unsteady feet;
MSG

MSG
7"But ask the animals what they think—let them teach you;let the birds tell you what's going on.
NABRE
7But now ask the beasts to teach you,the birds of the air to tell you;
MSG
8Put your ear to the earth—learn the basics.Listen—the fish in the ocean will tell you their stories.
NABRE
8Or speak to the earth to instruct you,and the fish of the sea to inform you.
MSG
9Isn't it clear that they all know and agreethat God is sovereign, that he holds all things in his hand—
NABRE
9Which of all these does not knowthat the hand of God has done this?
MSG
10Every living soul, yes, every breathing creature?
NABRE
10In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mortal flesh.
MSG
11Isn't this all just common sense,as common as the sense of taste?
NABRE
11Does not the ear judge wordsas the mouth tastes food?
MSG
12Do you think the elderly have a corner on wisdom, that you have to grow old before you understand life?
NABRE
12So with old age is wisdom, and with length of days understanding.
MSG
13"True wisdom and real power belong to God;from him we learn how to live, and also what to live for.
NABRE
13With him are wisdom and might;his are counsel and understanding.
MSG
14If he tears something down, it's down for good;if he locks people up, they're locked up for good.
NABRE
14If he knocks a thing down, there is no rebuilding; if he imprisons, there is no release.
MSG
15If he holds back the rain, there's a drought;if he lets it loose, there's a flood.
NABRE
15He holds back the waters and there is drought; he sends them forth and they overwhelm the land.
MSG
16Strength and success belong to God;both deceived and deceiver must answer to him.
NABRE
16With him are strength and prudence;the misled and the misleaders are his.
MSG

NABRE
17He sends counselors away barefoot, makes fools of judges.
MSG
18He divests kings of their royal garments, then ties a rag around their waists.
NABRE
18He loosens the belt of kings, ties a waistcloth on their loins.
MSG

NABRE
21He pours shame on nobles, the waistband of the strong he loosens.
MSG
22He shines a spotlight into caves of darkness, hauls deepest darkness into the noonday sun.
NABRE
22He uncovers deep things from the darkness, brings the gloom into the light.
MSG
23He makes nations rise and then fall, builds up some and abandons others.
NABRE

MSG
24He robs world leaders of their reason, and sends them off into no man's land.
NABRE

NABRE
25They grope in the darkness without light;he makes them wander like drunkards.
