1"We all know how silver seams the rocks,we've seen the stuff from which gold is refined,

1“Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.

2We're aware of how iron is dug out of the groundand copper is smelted from rock.

2Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted out of the ore.

3Miners penetrate the earth's darkness,searching the roots of the mountains for ore,digging away in the suffocating darkness.

3Man sets an end to darkness, and searches out, to the furthest bound, the stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.

4Far from civilization, far from the traffic,they cut a shaft,and are lowered into it by ropes.

4He breaks open a shaft away from where people live. They are forgotten by the foot. They hang far from men, they swing back and forth.

5Earth's surface is a field for grain,but its depths are a forge

11They discover the origins of rivers,and bring earth's secrets to light.

11He binds the streams that they don’t trickle. The thing that is hidden he brings out to light.

12"But where, oh where, will they find Wisdom?Where does Insight hide?

12“But where shall wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?

13Mortals don't have a clue,haven't the slightest idea where to look.

13Man doesn’t know its price; Neither is it found in the land of the living.

14Earth's depths say, 'It's not here';ocean deeps echo, 'Never heard of it.'

14The deep says, ‘It isn’t in me.’ The sea says, ‘It isn’t with me.’

15It can't be bought with the finest gold;no amount of silver can get it.

15It can’t be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price.

16Even famous Ophir gold can't buy it,not even diamonds and sapphires.

16It can’t be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

17Neither gold nor emeralds are comparable;extravagant jewelry can't touch it.

17Gold and glass can’t equal it, neither shall it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.

18Pearl necklaces and ruby bracelets—why bother?None of this is even a down payment on Wisdom!

18No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal. Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies.

19Pile gold and African diamonds as high as you will,they can't hold a candle to Wisdom.

19The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, Neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

20"So where does Wisdom come from?And where does Insight live?

20Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?

21It can't be found by looking, no matterhow deep you dig, no matter how high you fly.

21Seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the sky.

22If you search through the graveyard and question the dead,they say, 'We've only heard rumors of it.'

22Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’

23"God alone knows the way to Wisdom,he knows the exact place to find it.

23“God understands its way, and he knows its place.

24He knows where everything is on earth,he sees everything under heaven.

24For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky.

25After he commanded the winds to blowand measured out the waters,

25He establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.

26Arranged for the rainand set off explosions of thunder and lightning,

26When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;

27He focused on Wisdom,made sure it was all set and tested and ready.

27then he saw it, and declared it. He established it, yes, and searched it out.

28Then he addressed the human race: 'Here it is!Fear-of-the-Lord—that's Wisdom,and Insight means shunning evil.' "

28To man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”
