1Elihu lit into Job again:
NIV
1Then Elihu said:
MSG
2"Does this kind of thing make any sense?First you say, 'I'm perfectly innocent before God.'
NIV
2“Do you think this is just? You say, ‘I am in the right, not God.’
MSG
3And then you say, 'It doesn't make a bit of differencewhether I've sinned or not.'
NIV
3Yet you ask him, ‘What profit is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?’
MSG
4"Well, I'm going to show youthat you don't know what you're talking about, neither you nor your friends.
NIV
4“I would like to reply to you and to your friends with you.
MSG
5Look up at the sky. Take a long hard look.See those clouds towering above you?
NIV
5Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you.
MSG
6If you sin, what difference could that make to God?No matter how much you sin, will it matter to him?
NIV
6If you sin, how does that affect him? If your sins are many, what does that do to him?
MSG
7Even if you're good, what would God get out of that?Do you think he's dependent on your accomplishments?
NIV
7If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand?
MSG
8The only ones who care whether you're good or badare your family and friends and neighbors.God's not dependent on your behavior.
NIV
8Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself, and your righteousness only other people.
MSG
9"When times get bad, people cry out for help. They cry for relief from being kicked around,
NIV
9“People cry out under a load of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.
MSG
10But never give God a thought when things go well, when God puts spontaneous songs in their hearts,
NIV
10But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,
MSG
11When God sets out the entire creation as a science classroom, using birds and beasts to teach wisdom.
NIV
11who teaches us more than he teaches the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds in the sky?’
MSG
12People are arrogantly indifferent to God—until, of course, they're in trouble, and then God is indifferent to them.
NIV
12He does not answer when people cry out because of the arrogance of the wicked.
MSG
13There's nothing behind such prayers except panic;the Almighty pays them no mind.
NIV
13Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea; the Almighty pays no attention to it.
MSG
14So why would he notice youjust because you say you're tired of waiting to be heard,
NIV
14How much less, then, will he listen when you say that you do not see him, that your case is before him and you must wait for him,
MSG
15Or waiting for him to get good and angryand do something about the world's problems?
NIV
15and further, that his anger never punishes and he does not take the least notice of wickedness.
MSG
16"Job, you talk sheer nonsense—nonstop nonsense!"
NIV
16So Job opens his mouth with empty talk; without knowledge he multiplies words.”
