1It was an era when there was no king in Israel. A Levite, living as a stranger in the backwoods hill country of Ephraim, got himself a concubine, a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.

1Naqueles dias em que o povo de Israel não tinha um rei para governá-los, um levita foi morar bem longe, para os lados dos montes de Efraim. E amancebou-se com uma jovem de Belém de Judá.

2But she quarreled with him and left, returning to her father's house in Bethlehem in Judah. She was there four months.

2Todavia, ela lhe foi infiel. Deixou-o e voltou para a casa do seu pai, em Belém de Judá. E ficou lá durante quatro meses.

3Then her husband decided to go after her and try to win her back. He had a servant and a pair of donkeys with him. When he arrived at her father's house, the girl's father saw him, welcomed him, and made him feel at home.

3Então o homem resolveu ir a Belém atrás dela, para tentar convencê-la a retornar para ele. Ele partiu levando consigo seu servo e dois jumentos. Ao chegar à casa do pai da jovem, este vendo-o, veio alegremente ao seu encontro.

4His father-in-law, the girl's father, pressed him to stay. He stayed with him three days; they feasted and drank and slept.

4O pai da jovem o convenceu a ficar ali por algum tempo; e ele aceitando, permaneceu com eles por três dias. O casal passou a fazer as suas refeições e a dormir juntos.

5On the fourth day, they got up at the crack of dawn and got ready to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen yourself with a hearty breakfast and then you can go."

5No quarto dia eles se levantaram ao raiar do dia e se aprontaram para ir embora. Mas o pai da jovem lhes sugeriu: “Restaura as tuas forças comendo um pedaço de pão, e em seguida podereis partir.”

6So they sat down and ate breakfast together.The girl's father said to the man, "Come now, be my guest. Stay the night—make it a holiday."

6Estando assentados à mesa, eles comeram e beberam juntos como de costume, e então o pai da jovem pediu ao homem: “Consente, rogo-te, em ficar mais esta noite, e que se alegre o teu coração entre nós!”

7The man got up to go, but his father-in-law kept after him, so he ended up spending another night.

7Como o homem se levantasse decidido a partir, o pai da jovem insistiu uma vez mais, e por isso, ele passou ainda aquela noite ali.

8On the fifth day, he was again up early, ready to go. The girl's father said, "You need some breakfast." They went back and forth, and the day slipped on as they ate and drank together.

8No quinto dia, o levita se levantou de madrugada e aprontou-se para partir, mas o pai da jovem novamente lhe suplicou: “Restaura primeiro as tuas forças, peço-te!” E permaneceram assim até quase o final do dia, e comeram e beberam juntos.

9But the man and his concubine were finally ready to go. Then his father-in-law, the girl's father, said, "Look, the day's almost gone—why not stay the night? There's very little daylight left; stay another night and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow you can get an early start and set off for your own place."

9Então o homem levantou-se pronto para partir com a sua concubina e o seu servo, quando o pai da jovem, lhe ponderou: “Eis que o dia termina e a tarde vem chegando depressa, portanto passa conosco a noite pelo menos. O dia declina, passai a noite aqui em segurança e que teu coração se regozije conosco. Amanhã bem cedo partireis, e tu irás para a tua habitação!”

10But this time the man wasn't willing to spend another night. He got things ready, left, and went as far as Jebus (Jerusalem) with his pair of saddled donkeys, his concubine, and his servant.

10Contudo, o homem, recusando passar mais uma noite, levantou-se convicto, partiu e chegou até Ievus, Jebus, isto é, Jerusalém, com dois jumentos selados e com a sua mulher.

11At Jebus, though, the day was nearly gone. The servant said to his master, "It's late; let's go into this Jebusite city and spend the night."

11Quando estavam próximos a Jebus e já se findava o dia o servo sugeriu a seu senhor: “Vem, rogo-te, façamos um desvio e vamos passar a noite nesta cidade dos jebuseus.”

12But his master said, "We're not going into any city of foreigners. We'll go on to Gibeah."

12Seu senhor lhe replicou: “Não nos desviaremos do nosso caminho para ir a uma cidade de estrangeiros, porquanto esses não são israelitas, entretanto prosseguiremos até Guivá, Gibeá!”

13He directed his servant, "Keep going. Let's go on ahead. We'll spend the night either at Gibeah or Ramah."

13E acrescentou, ordenando ao seu servo: “Vamos, tratemos de alcançar um desses lugares: Gibeá ou Ramá, para ali pernoitarmos!”

14So they kept going. As they pressed on, the sun finally left them in the vicinity of Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

14Foram então mais longe e continuaram a sua caminhada. Ao chegarem defronte da cidade de Gibeá de Benjamim, o sol se escondia.

15They left the road there to spend the night at Gibeah.The Levite went and sat down in the town square, but no one invited them in to spend the night.

15Então eles se encaminharam apressadamente para Gibeá, a fim de passarem a noite ali. O levita entrou e se assentou na praça da cidade, mas ninguém lhe ofereceu hospitalidade em sua casa para pernoitar.

16Then, late in the evening, an old man came in from his day's work in the fields. He was from the hill country of Ephraim and lived temporarily in Gibeah where all the local citizens were Benjaminites.

16Veio um homem idoso que, ao cair da tarde, retornava do trabalho no campo. Era um senhor das montanhas de Efraim, que estava morando em Gibeá, enquanto os do lugar eram benjamitas.

17When the old man looked up and saw the traveler in the town square, he said, "Where are you going? And where are you from?"

17Assim que avistou o viajante na praça da cidade, o velho homem lhe indagou: “Para onde vais? E de onde vens?”

18The Levite said, "We're just passing through. We're coming from Bethlehem on our way to a remote spot in the hills of Ephraim. I come from there. I've just made a trip to Bethlehem in Judah and I'm on my way back home, but no one has invited us in for the night.

18E o levita lhe respondeu: “Fazemos o caminho de Belém de Judá para bem longe, rumo à região montanhosa de Efraim, onde moro. Fui a Belém e agora estou regressando para a Casa do Senhor. Contudo, nesta cidade ninguém me ofereceu hospedagem em sua casa.

19We wouldn't be any trouble: We have food and straw for the donkeys, and bread and wine for the woman, the young man, and me—we don't need anything."

19Entretanto, temos palha e forragem para nossos animais, e eu tenho também pão e vinho para mim, para a tua serva e para o jovem que acompanha o teu servo. Não precisamos de nada!”

20The old man said, "It's going to be all right; I'll take care of you. You aren't going to spend the night in the town square."

20Então aquele senhor lhe disse: “Sê bem-vindo em minha casa! Deixa-me ajudar-te no que necessitares, mas não passes a noite ao relento.”

21He took them home and fed the donkeys. They washed up and sat down to a good meal.
KJA
21Em seguida, ele os levou para a sua casa e alimentou os jumentos. Depois de lavarem os pés, reuniram-se para beber e comer.

22They were relaxed and enjoying themselves when the men of the city, a gang of local hell-raisers all, surrounded the house and started pounding on the door. They yelled for the owner of the house, the old man, "Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have sex with him."

22Quando estavam entretidos conversando, alguns vadios e depravados da cidade cercaram a casa. E desferindo violentos golpes contra a porta, gritavam para o homem idoso, dono da casa: “Faze sair o homem que está contigo, queremos ter relações sexuais com ele!”

23He went out and told them, "No, brothers! Don't be obscene—this man is my guest. Don't commit this outrage.

23O proprietário da casa saiu e lhes aconselhou: “Não, irmãos meus, rogo-vos, não sejais tão perversos. Considerai que este homem é meu hospede, não pratiqueis tal infâmia e crime!

24Look, my virgin daughter and his concubine are here. I'll bring them out for you. Abuse them if you must, but don't do anything so senselessly vile to this man."

24Aqui está minha filha, que é virgem e a mulher do meu hóspede. Eu as entregarei a vós. Subjugai-as, pois, e fazei com elas como bem vos parecer; mas não façais uma loucura dessas a este homem!”

25But the men wouldn't listen to him. Finally, the Levite pushed his concubine out the door to them. They raped her repeatedly all night long. Just before dawn they let her go.

25No entanto, aquelas pessoas não quiseram ouvi-lo. Então o levita pegou sua concubina e a entregou. Eles a violentaram e abusaram dela a noite toda. De madrugada a abandonaram.

26The woman came back and fell at the door of the house where her master was sleeping. When the sun rose, there she was.

26Ao amanhecer do dia a mulher voltou para a casa onde o seu senhor estava hospedado, caiu junto a porta e ali ficou até o dia clarear por completo.

27It was morning. Her master got up and opened the door to continue his journey. There she was, his concubine, crumpled in a heap at the door, her hands on the threshold.

27Quando o seu senhor se levantou de manhã, abriu a porta da casa e saiu para prosseguir viagem, lá estava a sua concubina, caída na soleira da porta.

28"Get up," he said. "Let's get going." There was no answer.

28Ele lhe disse: “Levanta-te! Vamos embora daqui!” Mas não houve resposta. Então o homem a colocou sobre o seu jumento e partiram para casa.

29He lifted her onto his donkey and set out for home. When he got home he took a knife and dismembered his concubine—cut her into twelve pieces. He sent her, piece by piece, throughout the country of Israel.

29Assim que chegou em casa, apanhou uma faca e cortou o corpo da sua concubina em doze partes, e as enviou a todas as tribos e regiões de Israel.

30And he ordered the men he sent out, "Say to every man in Israel: 'Has such a thing as this ever happened from the time the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now? Think about it! Talk it over. Do something!' "

30E todos os que viam aquilo exclamavam horrorizados: “Até hoje, nunca se fez nem se viu tal atitude, desde o dia em que os israelitas foram libertos e saíram do Egito! Refleti, pois, sobre tudo isto e respondei o que haveremos de fazer agora?
