1Godangel went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt; I led you to the land that I promised to your fathers; and I said, I'll never break my covenant with you—never!

1El ángel de YHVH subió entonces de Gilgal a Bojim, y dijo: Yo os hice subir de Egipto, y os introduje a la tierra que tenía jurada a vuestros padres y dije: No quebrantaré mi pacto con vosotros.

2And you're never to make a covenant with the people who live in this land. Tear down their altars! But you haven't obeyed me! What's this that you're doing?

2Pero vosotros hicisteis pacto con los habitantes de esta tierra, cuyos altares debíais derribar.° No habéis obedecido a mi voz. ¿Qué es esto que habéis hecho?

3"So now I'm telling you that I won't drive them out before you. They'll trip you up and their gods will become a trap."

3Por lo cual he dicho: No los expulsaré de delante de vosotros, sino que os serán espinas° en vuestros costados, y sus dioses serán trampa para vosotros.

4When God's angel had spoken these words to all the People of Israel, they cried out—oh! how they wept!

4Y cuando el ángel de YHVH habló estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo alzó su voz y lloró.

5They named the place Bokim (Weepers). And there they sacrificed to God.

5Y llamaron el nombre de aquel lugar Bojim.° Y allí ofrecieron sacrificios a YHVH.

6After Joshua had dismissed them, the People of Israel went off to claim their allotted territories and take possession of the land.

6Cuando Josué hubo despedido al pueblo, los hijos de Israel se fueron cada cual a su heredad para tomar posesión de la tierra.

7The people worshiped God throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the time of the leaders who survived him, leaders who had been in on all of God's great work that he had done for Israel.

7Y el pueblo sirvió a YHVH todos los días de Josué, y todos los días de los ancianos que sobrevivieron a Josué, quien había visto todas las grandes obras de YHVH, que Él había hecho a favor de Israel.

8Then Joshua son of Nun, the servant of God, died. He was 110 years old.

9They buried him in his allotted inheritance at Timnath Heres in the hills of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.

9y lo sepultaron en el territorio de su heredad, en Timnat-jeres,° en la serranía de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaas.

10Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn't know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.

10Y toda aquella generación también fue reunida a sus padres. Pero después de ellos se levantó otra generación que no conocía° a YHVH, ni las obras que Él había hecho por Israel.

11The People of Israel did evil in God's sight:

11Entonces los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos de YHVH, y sirvieron a los baales.°

12they served Baal-gods; they deserted God, the God of their parents who had led them out of Egypt; they took up with other gods, gods of the peoples around them. They actually worshiped them! And oh, how they angered God

12Así abandonaron a YHVH, el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y anduvieron tras otros dioses, los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, y se postraron ante ellos, y provocaron a ira a YHVH.

13as they worshiped god Baal and goddess Astarte!

13Abandonaron pues a YHVH, y sirvieron a Baal y a Astarot.°

14God's anger was hot against Israel: He handed them off to plunderers who stripped them; he sold them cheap to enemies on all sides. They were helpless before their enemies.

14Por eso la ira de YHVH se encendió contra Israel, y los entregó en manos de saqueadores que los despojaron, y los entregó en manos de sus enemigos en derredor, de manera que ya no pudieron hacer frente a sus enemigos.

15Every time they walked out the door God was with them—but for evil, just as God had said, just as he had sworn he would do. They were in a bad way.

15Por dondequiera que salían, la mano de YHVH estaba contra ellos para mal, como YHVH había hablado, y como YHVH se lo había jurado, de suerte que se veían en grandes aprietos.

16But then God raised up judges who saved them from their plunderers.

16Entonces YHVH levantaba jueces que los libraban de mano de sus saqueadores.

17But they wouldn't listen to their judges; they prostituted themselves to other gods—worshiped them! They lost no time leaving the road walked by their parents, the road of obedience to God's commands. They refused to have anything to do with it.

17Pero ni aun a sus jueces escucharon, sino que, prostituyéndose tras otros dioses, se postraban ante ellos. Muy pronto se desviaron del camino en que anduvieron sus padres para obedecer los mandamientos de YHVH, pero ellos no lo hicieron así.

18When God was setting up judges for them, he would be right there with the judge: He would save them from their enemies' oppression as long as the judge was alive, for God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning because of those who afflicted and beat them.

18Y cuando YHVH les levantaba jueces, YHVH estaba con el juez y los libraba de mano de sus enemigos todos los días de aquel juez, porque YHVH se conmovía de sus gemidos a causa de quienes los maltrataban y oprimían.

19But when the judge died, the people went right back to their old ways—but even worse than their parents!—running after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Stubborn as mules, they didn't drop a single evil practice.

19Pero sucedía que cuando moría aquel juez, ellos se volvían atrás y se corrompían más que sus padres, yendo en pos de otros dioses para servirles y postrarse ante ellos, y no desistían de sus prácticas ni de seguir su perverso camino.

20And God's anger blazed against Israel. He said, "Because these people have thrown out my covenant that I commanded their parents and haven't listened to me,

20Por lo cual la ira de YHVH se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: Por cuanto esta nación transgrede mi pacto, el que ordené a sus padres, y no obedecen mi voz,

21I'm not driving out one more person from the nations that Joshua left behind when he died.

21tampoco Yo volveré más a desposeer de delante de ellos a hombre alguno de aquellas naciones que Josué dejó cuando murió,

22I'll use them to test Israel and see whether they stay on God's road and walk down it as their parents did."

22a fin de probar por medio de ellas a Israel, si guardarían o no el camino de YHVH para andar en él, como sus padres lo guardaron.

23That's why God let those nations remain. He didn't drive them out or let Joshua get rid of them.

23Por esto YHVH había dejado a aquellas naciones sin desposeerlas de una vez y no las había entregado en mano de Josué.
