NABRE
MSG
1Godangel went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt; I led you to the land that I promised to your fathers; and I said, I'll never break my covenant with you—never!
NABRE
1A messenger of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land which I promised on oath to your ancestors. I said, I will never break my covenant with you,
MSG
2And you're never to make a covenant with the people who live in this land. Tear down their altars! But you haven't obeyed me! What's this that you're doing?
NABRE
2but you must not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you must pull down their altars. But you did not listen to me. Look what you have done!
MSG
3"So now I'm telling you that I won't drive them out before you. They'll trip you up and their gods will become a trap."
NABRE
3For I also said, I will not clear them out of your way; they will become traps for you, and their gods a snare for you.
MSG
4When God's angel had spoken these words to all the People of Israel, they cried out—oh! how they wept!
NABRE
4When the messenger of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud.
MSG
5They named the place Bokim (Weepers). And there they sacrificed to God.
NABRE
5They named that place Bochim, and they offered sacrifice there to the Lord.
MSG
6After Joshua had dismissed them, the People of Israel went off to claim their allotted territories and take possession of the land.
NABRE
6Then Joshua dismissed the people, and the Israelites went, each to their own heritage, to take possession of the land.
MSG
7The people worshiped God throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the time of the leaders who survived him, leaders who had been in on all of God's great work that he had done for Israel.
NABRE
7The people served the Lord during the entire lifetime of Joshua, and of those elders who outlived Joshua and who had seen all the great work the Lord had done for Israel.
MSG
8Then Joshua son of Nun, the servant of God, died. He was 110 years old.
NABRE
8Joshua, son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten,
MSG
9They buried him in his allotted inheritance at Timnath Heres in the hills of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.
NABRE
9and they buried him within the borders of his heritage at Timnath-heres in the mountain region of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.
MSG
10Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn't know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.
NABRE
10When the rest of that generation were also gathered to their ancestors, and a later generation arose that did not know the Lord or the work he had done for Israel,
MSG
11The People of Israel did evil in God's sight:
NABRE
11the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They served the Baals,
MSG
12they served Baal-gods; they deserted God, the God of their parents who had led them out of Egypt; they took up with other gods, gods of the peoples around them. They actually worshiped them! And oh, how they angered God
NABRE
12and abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the one who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, the gods of the peoples around them, and bowed down to them, and provoked the Lord.
MSG
13as they worshiped god Baal and goddess Astarte!
NABRE
13Because they had abandoned the Lord and served Baal and the Astartes,
MSG
14God's anger was hot against Israel: He handed them off to plunderers who stripped them; he sold them cheap to enemies on all sides. They were helpless before their enemies.
NABRE
14the anger of the Lord flared up against Israel, and he delivered them into the power of plunderers who despoiled them. He sold them into the power of the enemies around them, and they were no longer able to withstand their enemies.
MSG
15Every time they walked out the door God was with them—but for evil, just as God had said, just as he had sworn he would do. They were in a bad way.
NABRE
15Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord turned against them, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them; and they were in great distress.
MSG
16But then God raised up judges who saved them from their plunderers.
NABRE
16But the Lord raised up judges to save them from the power of their plunderers;
MSG
17But they wouldn't listen to their judges; they prostituted themselves to other gods—worshiped them! They lost no time leaving the road walked by their parents, the road of obedience to God's commands. They refused to have anything to do with it.
NABRE
17but they did not listen to their judges either, for they prostituted themselves by following other gods, bowing down to them. They were quick to stray from the way their ancestors had taken, who obeyed the commandments of the Lord; but these did not.
MSG
18When God was setting up judges for them, he would be right there with the judge: He would save them from their enemies' oppression as long as the judge was alive, for God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning because of those who afflicted and beat them.
NABRE
18When the Lord raised up judges for them, he would be with the judge and save them from the power of their enemies as long as the judge lived. The Lord would change his mind when they groaned in their affliction under their oppressors.
MSG
19But when the judge died, the people went right back to their old ways—but even worse than their parents!—running after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Stubborn as mules, they didn't drop a single evil practice.
NABRE
19But when the judge died, they would again do worse than their ancestors, following other gods, serving and bowing down to them, relinquishing none of their evil practices or stubborn ways.
MSG
20And God's anger blazed against Israel. He said, "Because these people have thrown out my covenant that I commanded their parents and haven't listened to me,
NABRE
20The anger of the Lord flared up against Israel, and he said: Because this nation has transgressed my covenant, which I enjoined on their ancestors, and has not listened to me,
MSG
21I'm not driving out one more person from the nations that Joshua left behind when he died.
NABRE
21I for my part will not clear away for them any more of the nations Joshua left when he died.
MSG
22I'll use them to test Israel and see whether they stay on God's road and walk down it as their parents did."
NABRE
22They will be made to test Israel, to see whether or not they will keep to the way of the Lord and continue in it as their ancestors did.
MSG
23That's why God let those nations remain. He didn't drive them out or let Joshua get rid of them.
NABRE
23Therefore the Lord allowed these nations to remain instead of expelling them immediately. He had not delivered them into the power of Joshua.
