1Yet again the People of Israel went back to doing evil in God's sight. God put them under the domination of Midian for seven years.
AMP
1Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years.
MSG
2Midian overpowered Israel. Because of Midian, the People of Israel made for themselves hideouts in the mountains—caves and forts.
AMP
2The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves the dens (hideouts) which were in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds.
MSG
3When Israel planted its crops, Midian and Amalek, the easterners, would invade them,
AMP
3For it was whenever Israel had sown that the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the people of the east and go up against them.
MSG
4camp in their fields, and destroy their crops all the way down to Gaza. They left nothing for them to live on, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey.
AMP
4So they would camp against them and destroy the crops of the land as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel as well as no sheep, ox, or donkey.
MSG
5Bringing their cattle and tents, they came in and took over, like an invasion of locusts. And their camels—past counting! They marched in and devastated the country.
AMP
5For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, and they would come in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were innumerable. So they came into the land to devastate it.
MSG
6The People of Israel, reduced to grinding poverty by Midian, cried out to God for help.
AMP
6So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the Israelites cried out to the LORD .
MSG
7One time when the People of Israel had cried out to God because of Midian,
AMP
7Now it came about when they cried out to the LORD because of Midian,
MSG
8God sent them a prophet with this message: "God, the God of Israel, says,I delivered you from Egypt,I freed you from a life of slavery;
AMP
8that the LORD sent a prophet to the Israelites, and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery.
MSG
9I rescued you from Egypt's brutalityand then from every oppressor;I pushed them out of your wayand gave you their land.
AMP
9And I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land,
MSG
10"And I said to you, 'I am God, your God. Don't for a minute be afraid of the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living.' But you didn't listen to me."
AMP
10and I said to you, "I am the LORD your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live." But you have not listened to and obeyed My voice.'"
MSG
11One day the angel of God came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, whose son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress, out of sight of the Midianites.
AMP
11Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon was beating wheat in the wine press to save it from the Midianites.
MSG
12The angel of God appeared to him and said,"God is with you,O mighty warrior!"
AMP
12And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, O brave man."
MSG
13Gideon replied, "With me, my master? If God is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all the miracle-wonders our parents and grandparents told us about, telling us, 'Didn't God deliver us from Egypt?' The fact is, God has nothing to do with us—he has turned us over to Midian."
AMP
13But Gideon said to him, "Please my lord, if the LORD is with us, then why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wondrous works which our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."
MSG
14But God faced him directly: "Go in this strength that is yours. Save Israel from Midian. Haven't I just sent you?"
AMP
14The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this strength of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?"
MSG
15Gideon said to him, "Me, my master? How and with what could I ever save Israel? Look at me. My clan's the weakest in Manasseh and I'm the runt of the litter."
AMP
15But Gideon said to Him, "Please Lord, how am I to rescue Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest (smallest) in my father's house."
MSG
16God said to him, "I'll be with you. Believe me, you'll defeat Midian as one man."
AMP
16The LORD answered him, "I will certainly be with you, and you will strike down the Midianites as one man."
MSG
17Gideon said, "If you're serious about this, do me a favor: Give me a sign to back up what you're telling me.
AMP
17Gideon replied to Him, "If I have found any favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speaks with me.
MSG
18Don't leave until I come back and bring you my gift."He said, "I'll wait till you get back."
AMP
18Please do not depart from here until I come back to You, and bring my offering and place it before You." And He said, "I will wait until you return."
MSG
19Gideon went and prepared a young goat and a huge amount of unraised bread (he used over half a bushel of flour!). He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot and took them back under the shade of the oak tree for a sacred meal.
AMP
19Then Gideon went and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket and the broth in a pot, and he brought the food to Him under the oak (terebinth) and presented it.
MSG
20The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unraised bread, place them on that rock, and pour the broth on them." Gideon did it.
AMP
20The Angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth ." And he did so.
MSG
21The angel of God stretched out the tip of the stick he was holding and touched the meat and the bread. Fire broke out of the rock and burned up the meat and bread while the angel of God slipped away out of sight.
AMP
21Then the Angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in His hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire flared up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the Angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.
MSG
22And Gideon knew it was the angel of God!Gideon said, "Oh no! Master, God! I have seen the angel of God face to face!"
AMP
22When Gideon realized that He was the Angel of the LORD, he declared, " Oh no, Lord GOD! For now I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face !"
MSG
23But God reassured him, "Easy now. Don't panic. You won't die."
AMP
23The LORD said to him, "Peace to you, do not be afraid; you shall not die."
MSG
24Then Gideon built an altar there to God and named it "God's Peace." It's still called that at Ophrah of Abiezer.
AMP
24Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and named it The LORD is Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah, of the Abiezrites.
MSG
25That night this happened. God said to him, "Take your father's best seven-year-old bull, the prime one. Tear down your father's Baal altar and chop down the Asherah fertility pole beside it.
AMP
25Now on that same night the LORD said to Gideon, "Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that belongs to your father, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it;
MSG
26Then build an altar to God, your God, on the top of this hill. Take the prime bull and present it as a Whole-Burnt-Offering, using firewood from the Asherah pole that you cut down."
AMP
26and build an altar to the LORD your God on top of this mountain stronghold in an orderly way. Then take the second bull and offer a burnt sacrifice using the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down."
MSG
27Gideon selected ten men from his servants and did exactly what God had told him. But because of his family and the people in the neighborhood, he was afraid to do it openly, so he did it that night.
AMP
27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did just as the LORD had told him; but because he was too afraid of his father's household (relatives) and the men of the city to do it during daylight, he did it at night.
MSG
28Early in the morning, the people in town were shocked to find Baal's altar torn down, the Asherah pole beside it chopped down, and the prime bull burning away on the altar that had been built.
AMP
28Early the next morning when the men of the city got up, they discovered that the altar of Baal was torn down, and the Asherah which was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar which had been built.
MSG
29They kept asking, "Who did this?"Questions and more questions, and then the answer: "Gideon son of Joash did it."
AMP
29So they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" When they searched about and inquired, they were told, "Gideon the son of Joash did it."
MSG
30The men of the town demanded of Joash: "Bring out your son! He must die! Why, he tore down the Baal altar and chopped down the Asherah tree!"
AMP
30Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, so that he may be executed, because he has torn down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah which was beside it."
MSG
31But Joash stood up to the crowd pressing in on him, "Are you going to fight Baal's battles for him? Are you going to save him? Anyone who takes Baal's side will be dead by morning. If Baal is a god in fact, let him fight his own battles and defend his own altar."
AMP
31But Joash said to all who stood against him, "Will you plead for Baal? Will you save him? Whoever pleads for Baal shall be put to death while it is still morning. If Baal is a god, let him defend himself, because someone has torn down his altar."
MSG
32They nicknamed Gideon that day Jerub-Baal because after he had torn down the Baal altar, he had said, "Let Baal fight his own battles."
AMP
32Therefore on that day he named Gideon Jerubbaal, meaning, "Let Baal plead," because he had torn down his altar.
MSG
33All the Midianites and Amalekites (the easterners) got together, crossed the river, and made camp in the Valley of Jezreel.
AMP
33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east assembled together; and they crossed over and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.
MSG
34God's Spirit came over Gideon. He blew his ram's horn trumpet and the Abiezrites came out, ready to follow him.
AMP
34So the Spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon ; and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called together to follow him.
MSG
35He dispatched messengers all through Manasseh, calling them to the battle; also to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali. They all came.
AMP
35He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and the fighting men were also called together to follow him; and he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they came up to meet them.
MSG
36Gideon said to God, "If this is right, if you are using me to save Israel as you've said,
AMP
36Then Gideon said to God, "If You are going to rescue Israel through me, as You have spoken,
MSG
37then look: I'm placing a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If dew is on the fleece only, but the floor is dry, then I know that you will use me to save Israel, as you said."
AMP
37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, and it is dry on all the ground , then I will know that You will rescue Israel through me, as You have said."
MSG
38That's what happened. When he got up early the next morning, he wrung out the fleece—enough dew to fill a bowl with water!
AMP
38And it was so. When he got up early the next morning and squeezed the dew out of the fleece, he wrung from it a bowl full of water.
MSG
39Then Gideon said to God, "Don't be impatient with me, but let me say one more thing. I want to try another time with the fleece. But this time let the fleece stay dry, while the dew drenches the ground."
AMP
39Then Gideon said to God, "Do not let your anger burn against me, so that I may speak once more. Please let me make a test once more with the fleece; now let only the fleece be dry, and let there be dew on all the ground."
MSG
40God made it happen that very night. Only the fleece was dry while the ground was wet with dew.
AMP
40God did so that night; for it was dry only on the fleece, and there was dew on all the ground .
