1Abimelech son of Jerub-Baal went to Shechem to his uncles and all his mother's relatives and said to them,

2"Ask all the leading men of Shechem, 'What do you think is best, that seventy men rule you—all those sons of Jerub-Baal—or that one man rule? You'll remember that I am your own flesh and blood.' "

3His mother's relatives reported the proposal to the leaders of Shechem. They were inclined to take Abimelech. "Because," they said, "he is, after all, one of us."

7When this was all told to Jotham, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and shouted:Listen to me, leaders of Shechem.And let God listen to you!

9Mas a oliveira lhes respondeu: Deixaria eu a minha gordura, que Deus e os homens em mim prezam, para ir balouçar sobre as árvores?

10The trees then said to Fig Tree,"You come and rule over us."
ARA
10Então disseram as árvores à figueira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.

11But Fig Tree said to them,"Am I no longer good for making sweets,My mouthwatering sweet fruits,and to be demoted to waving over trees?"
ARA
11Mas a figueira lhes respondeu: Deixaria eu a minha doçura, o meu bom fruto, para ir balouçar sobre as árvores?

12The trees then said to Vine,"You come and rule over us."
ARA
12Disseram então as árvores à videira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.

13But Vine said to them,"Am I no longer good for making wine,Wine that cheers gods and men,and to be demoted to waving over trees?"
ARA
13Mas a videira lhes respondeu: Deixaria eu o meu mosto, que alegra a Deus e aos homens, para ir balouçar sobre as árvores?

14All the trees then said to Tumbleweed,"You come and reign over us."
ARA
14Então todas as árvores disseram ao espinheiro: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.

15But Tumbleweed said to the trees:"If you're serious about making me your king,Come and find shelter in my shade.But if not, let fire shoot from Tumbleweedand burn down the cedars of Lebanon!"

15O espinheiro, porém, respondeu às árvores: Se de boa fé me ungis por vosso rei, vinde refugiar-vos debaixo da minha sombra; mas, se não, saia fogo do espinheiro, e devore os cedros do Líbano.

16"Now listen: Do you think you did a right and honorable thing when you made Abimelech king? Do you think you treated Jerub-Baal and his family well, did for him what he deserved?

16Agora, pois, se de boa fé e com retidão procedestes, constituindo rei a Abimeleque, e se bem fizestes para com Jerubaal e para com a sua casa, e se com ele usastes conforme o merecimento das suas mãos

17My father fought for you, risked his own life, and rescued you from Midian's tyranny,

17(porque meu pai pelejou por vós, desprezando a própria vida, e vos livrou da mão de Midiã;

18and you have, just now, betrayed him. You massacred his sons—seventy men on a single stone! You made Abimelech, the son by his maidservant, king over Shechem's leaders because he's your relative.

18porém vós hoje vos levantastes contra a casa de meu pai, e matastes a seus filhos, setenta homens, sobre uma só pedra; e a Abimeleque, filho da sua serva, fizestes reinar sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, porque é vosso irmão);

19If you think that this is an honest day's work, this way you have treated Jerub-Baal today, then enjoy Abimelech and let him enjoy you.

19se de boa fé e com retidão procedestes hoje para com Jerubaal e para com a sua casa, alegrai-vos em Abimeleque, e também ele se alegre em vós;

20But if not, let fire break from Abimelech and burn up the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo. And let fire break from the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo and burn up Abimelech."

20mas se não, saia fogo de Abimeleque, e devore os cidadãos de Siquém, e a Bete-Milo; e saia fogo dos cidadãos de Siquém e de Bete-Milo, e devore Abimeleque.

21And Jotham fled. He ran for his life. He went to Beer and settled down there, because he was afraid of his brother Abimelech.

22Abimelech ruled over Israel for three years.

23Then God brought bad blood between Abimelech and Shechem's leaders, who now worked treacherously behind his back.

24Violence boomeranged: The murderous violence that killed the seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal, was now loose among Abimelech and Shechem's leaders, who had supported the violence.

24para que a violência praticada contra os setenta filhos de Jerubaal, como também o sangue deles, recaíssem sobre Abimeleque, seu irmão, que os matara, e sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, que fortaleceram as mãos dele para matar a seus irmãos.

25To undermine Abimelech, Shechem's leaders put men in ambush on the mountain passes who robbed travelers on those roads. And Abimelech was told.

26At that time Gaal son of Ebed arrived with his relatives and moved into Shechem. The leaders of Shechem trusted him.

27One day they went out into the fields, gathered grapes in the vineyards, and trod them in the winepress. Then they held a celebration in their god's temple, a feast, eating and drinking. And then they started putting down Abimelech.

27Saindo ao campo, vindimaram as suas vinhas, pisaram as uvas e fizeram uma festa; e, entrando na casa de seu deus, comeram e beberam, e amaldiçoaram a Abimeleque.

28Gaal son of Ebed said, "Who is this Abimelech? And who are we Shechemites to take orders from him? Isn't he the son of Jerub-Baal, and isn't this his henchman Zebul? We belong to the race of Hamor and bear the noble name of Shechem. Why should we be toadies of Abimelech?

28E disse Gaal, filho de Ebede: Quem é Abimeleque, e quem é Siquém, para que sirvamos a Abimeleque? não é, porventura, filho de Jerubaal? e não é Zebul o seu mordomo? Servi antes aos homens de Hamor, pai de Siquém; pois, por que razão serviríamos nós a Abimeleque?

29If I were in charge of this people, the first thing I'd do is get rid of Abimelech! I'd say, 'Show me your stuff, Abimelech—let's see who's boss here!' "

29Ah! se este povo estivesse sob a minha mão, eu transtornaria a Abimeleque. Eu lhe diria: Multiplica o teu exército, e vem.

30Zebul, governor of the city, heard what Gaal son of Ebed was saying and got angry.
ARA
30Quando Zebul, o governador da cidade, ouviu as palavras de Gaal, filho de Ebede, acendeu-se em ira.

31Secretly he sent messengers to Abimelech with the message, "Gaal son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem and are stirring up trouble against you.

31E enviou secretamente mensageiros a Abimeleque, para lhe dizerem: Eis que Gaal, filho de Ebede, e seus irmãos vieram a Siquém, e estão sublevando a cidade contra ti.

32Here's what you do: Tonight bring your troops and wait in ambush in the field.

32Levanta-te, pois, de noite, tu e o povo que tiveres contigo, e põe-te de emboscada no campo.

33In the morning, as soon as the sun breaks, get moving and charge the city. Gaal and his troops will come out to you, and you'll know what to do next."
ARA
33E pela manhã, ao nascer do sol, levanta-te, e dá de golpe sobre a cidade; e, saindo contra ti Gaal e o povo que tiver com ele, faze-lhe como te permitirem as circunstâncias.

34Abimelech and his troops, four companies of them, went up that night and waited in ambush approaching Shechem.

34Levantou-se, pois, de noite Abimeleque, e todo o povo que com ele havia, e puseram emboscadas a Siquém, em quatro bandos.

35Gaal son of Ebed had gotten up and was standing in the city gate. Abimelech and his troops left their cover.

35E Gaal, filho de Ebede, saiu e pôs-se à entrada da porta da cidade; e das emboscadas se levantou Abimeleque, e todo o povo que estava com ele.

36When Gaal saw them he said to Zebul, "Look at that, people coming down from the tops of the mountains!"Zebul said, "That's nothing but mountain shadows; they just look like men." Gaal kept chattering away.

36Quando Gaal viu aquele povo, disse a Zebul: Eis que desce gente dos cumes dos montes. Respondeu-lhe Zebul: Tu vês as sombras dos montes como se fossem homens.

37Then he said again, "Look at the troops coming down off Tabbur-erez (the Navel of the World)—and one company coming straight from the Oracle Oak."

37Gaal, porém, tornou a falar, e disse: Eis que desce gente do meio da terra; também vem uma tropa do caminho do carvalho de Meonenim.

38Zebul said, "Where is that big mouth of yours now? You who said, 'And who is Abimelech that we should take orders from him?' Well, there he is with the troops you ridiculed. Here's your chance. Fight away!"

38Então lhe disse Zebul: Onde está agora a tua boca, com a qual dizias: Quem é Abimeleque, para que o sirvamos? Não é esse, porventura, o povo que desprezaste. Sai agora e peleja contra ele!

39Gaal went out, backed by the leaders of Shechem, and did battle with Abimelech.

39Assim saiu Gaal, à frente dos cidadãos de Siquém, e pelejou contra Abimeleque.

40Abimelech chased him, and Gaal turned tail and ran. Many fell wounded, right up to the city gate.
ARA
40Mas Abimeleque o perseguiu, pois Gaal fugiu diante dele, e muitos caíram feridos até a entrada da porta.

41Abimelech set up his field headquarters at Arumah while Zebul kept Gaal and his relatives out of Shechem.
ARA
41Abimeleque ficou em Arumá. E Zebul expulsou Gaal e seus irmãos, para que não habitassem em Siquém.

42The next day the people went out to the fields. This was reported to Abimelech.
ARA
42No dia seguinte sucedeu que o povo saiu ao campo; disto foi avisado Abimeleque,

43He took his troops, divided them into three companies, and placed them in ambush in the fields. When he saw that the people were well out in the open, he sprang up and attacked them.
ARA
43o qual, tomando o seu povo, dividiu-o em três bandos, que pôs de emboscada no campo. Quando viu que o povo saía da cidade, levantou-se contra ele e o feriu.

44Abimelech and the company with him charged ahead and took control of the entrance to the city gate; the other two companies chased down those who were in the open fields and killed them.

44Abimeleque e os que estavam com ele correram e se puseram à porta da cidade; e os outros dois bandos deram de improviso sobre todos quantos estavam no campo, e os feriram.

45Abimelech fought at the city all that day. He captured the city and massacred everyone in it. He leveled the city to the ground, then sowed it with salt.

45Abimeleque pelejou contra a cidade todo aquele dia, tomou-a e matou o povo que nela se achava; e, assolando-a, a semeou de sal.

46When the leaders connected with Shechem's Tower heard this, they went into the fortified God-of-the-Covenant temple.

46Tendo ouvido isso todos os cidadãos de Migdol-Siquém, entraram na fortaleza, na casa de El-Berite.

47This was reported to Abimelech that the Shechem's Tower bunch were gathered together.

48He and his troops climbed Mount Zalmon (Dark Mountain). Abimelech took his ax and chopped a bundle of firewood, picked it up, and put it on his shoulder. He said to his troops, "Do what you've seen me do, and quickly."

48Então Abimeleque subiu ao monte Zalmom, ele e todo o povo que com ele havia; e, tomando na mão um machado, cortou um ramo de árvore e, levantando-o, pô-lo ao seu ombro, e disse ao povo que estava com ele: O que me vistes fazer, apressai-vos a fazê-lo também.

49So each of his men cut his own bundle. They followed Abimelech, piled their bundles against the Tower fortifications, and set the whole structure on fire. Everyone in Shechem's Tower died, about a thousand men and women.

49Tendo, pois, cada um cortado o seu ramo, seguiram a Abimeleque; e, pondo os ramos junto da fortaleza, queimaram-na a fogo com os que nela estavam; de modo que morreram também todos os de Migdol-Siquém, cerca de mil homens e mulheres.

50Abimelech went on to Thebez. He camped at Thebez and captured it.

50Então Abimeleque foi a Tebez, e a sitiou e tomou.

51The Tower-of-Strength stood in the middle of the city; all the men and women of the city along with the city's leaders had fled there and locked themselves in. They were up on the tower roof.

51Havia, porém, no meio da cidade uma torre forte, na qual se refugiaram todos os habitantes da cidade, homens e mulheres; e fechando após si as portas, subiram ao eirado da torre.

52Abimelech got as far as the tower and assaulted it. He came up to the tower door to set it on fire.

52E Abimeleque, tendo chegado até a torre, atacou-a, e chegou-se à porta da torre, para lhe meter fogo.

53Just then some woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and crushed his skull.
ARA
53Nisso uma mulher lançou a pedra superior de um moinho sobre a cabeça de Abimeleque, e quebrou-lhe o crânio.

54He called urgently to his young armor-bearer and said, "Draw your sword and kill me so they can't say of me, 'A woman killed him.' " His armor bearer drove in his sword, and Abimelech died.

54Então ele chamou depressa o moço, seu escudeiro, e disse-lhe: Desembainha a tua espada e mata-me, para que não se diga de mim: uma mulher o matou. E o moço o traspassou e ele morreu.

55When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they went home.

55Vendo, pois, os homens de Israel que Abimeleque já era morto, foram-se cada um para o seu lugar.

56God avenged the evil Abimelech had done to his father, murdering his seventy brothers.

57And God brought down on the heads of the men of Shechem all the evil that they had done, the curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal.
