Lc 12LucasLc 14
MSG
1About that time some people came up and told him about the Galileans Pilate had killed while they were at worship, mixing their blood with the blood of the sacrifices on the altar.
AMP
1Just at that time some people came who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
MSG
2Jesus responded, "Do you think those murdered Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans?
AMP
2Jesus replied to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans because they have suffered in this way?
MSG
3Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die.
AMP
3I tell you, no; but unless you repent , you will all likewise perish.
MSG
4And those eighteen in Jerusalem the other day, the ones crushed and killed when the Tower of Siloam collapsed and fell on them, do you think they were worse citizens than all other Jerusalemites?
AMP
4Or do you assume that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed were worse sinners than all the others who live in Jerusalem?
MSG
5Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die."
AMP
5I tell you, no; but unless you repent , you will all likewise perish."
MSG
6Then he told them a story: "A man had an apple tree planted in his front yard. He came to it expecting to find apples, but there weren't any.
AMP
6Then He began telling them this parable: "A certain man had a fig tree that had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find any;
MSG
7He said to his gardener, 'What's going on here? For three years now I've come to this tree expecting apples and not one apple have I found. Chop it down! Why waste good ground with it any longer?'
AMP
7so he said to the vineyard-keeper, 'For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and have found none. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground ?'
MSG
8"The gardener said, 'Let's give it another year. I'll dig around it and fertilize,
AMP
8But he replied to him, 'Let it alone, sir, one more year until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;
MSG
9and maybe it will produce next year; if it doesn't, then chop it down.'"
AMP
9and if it bears fruit after this, fine; but if not, cut it down.'"
MSG
10He was teaching in one of the meeting places on the Sabbath.
AMP
10Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
MSG
11There was a woman present, so twisted and bent over with arthritis that she couldn't even look up. She had been afflicted with this for eighteen years.
AMP
11And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had an illness caused by a spirit (demon). She was bent double, and could not straighten up at all.
MSG
12When Jesus saw her, he called her over. "Woman, you're free!"
AMP
12When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are released from your illness."
MSG
13He laid hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall, giving glory to God.
AMP
13Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood erect again and she began glorifying and praising God.
MSG
14The meeting-place president, furious because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the congregation, "Six days have been defined as work days. Come on one of the six if you want to be healed, but not on the seventh, the Sabbath."
AMP
14But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, "There are six days in which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day."
MSG
15But Jesus shot back, "You frauds! Each Sabbath every one of you regularly unties your cow or donkey from its stall, leads it out for water, and thinks nothing of it.
AMP
15But the Lord replied to him, "You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it?
MSG
16So why isn't it all right for me to untie this daughter of Abraham and lead her from the stall where Satan has had her tied these eighteen years?"
AMP
16And this woman, a daughter (descendant) of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?"
MSG
17When he put it that way, his critics were left looking quite silly and red-faced. The congregation was delighted and cheered him on.
AMP
17As He was saying this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things that were being done by Him.
MSG
18Then he said, "How can I picture God's kingdom for you? What kind of story can I use?
AMP
18So this led Him to say, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?
MSG
19It's like a pine nut that a man plants in his front yard. It grows into a huge pine tree with thick branches, and eagles build nests in it."
AMP
19It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky found shelter and nested in its branches."
MSG
20He tried again. "How can I picture God's kingdom?
AMP
20And again He said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
MSG
21It's like yeast that a woman works into enough dough for three loaves of bread—and waits while the dough rises."
AMP
21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three peck measures of flour until it was all leavened."
MSG
22He went on teaching from town to village, village to town, but keeping on a steady course toward Jerusalem.
AMP
22Jesus journeyed on through cities and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem.
MSG
23A bystander said, "Master, will only a few be saved?" He said,
AMP
23And someone asked Him, "Lord, will only a few be saved ?" And He said to them,
MSG
24"Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with God. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you are going to assume that you'll sit down to God's salvation banquet just because you've been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives.
AMP
24"Strive to enter through the narrow door ; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.
MSG
25Well, one day you're going to be banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you'll find the door locked and the Master saying, 'Sorry, you're not on my guest list.'
AMP
25Once the head of the house gets up and closes the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door , saying, 'Lord, open to us!' then He will answer you, 'I do not know where you are from .'
MSG
26"You'll protest, 'But we've known you all our lives!'
AMP
26Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets';
MSG
27only to be interrupted with his abrupt, 'Your kind of knowing can hardly be called knowing. You don't know the first thing about me.'
AMP
27but He will say to you, 'I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers!'
MSG
28"That's when you'll find yourselves out in the cold, strangers to grace. You'll watch Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets march into God's kingdom.
AMP
28In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out and driven away.
MSG
29You'll watch outsiders stream in from east, west, north, and south and sit down at the table of God's kingdom. And all the time you'll be outside looking in—and wondering what happened.
AMP
29And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and they will sit down in the kingdom of God.
MSG
30This is the Great Reversal: the last in line put at the head of the line, and the so-called first ending up last.
AMP
30And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
MSG
31Just then some Pharisees came up and said, "Run for your life! Herod's on the hunt. He's out to kill you!"
AMP
31At that very hour some Pharisees came up and said to Him, "Leave and go away from here, because Herod wants to kill You."
MSG
32Jesus said, "Tell that fox that I've no time for him right now. Today and tomorrow I'm busy clearing out the demons and healing the sick; the third day I'm wrapping things up.
AMP
32And He said to them, "Go and tell that fox , 'Listen carefully: I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I reach My goal.'
MSG
33Besides, it's not proper for a prophet to come to a bad end outside Jerusalem.
AMP
33Nevertheless I must travel on today and tomorrow and the day after that—for it cannot be that a prophet would die outside of Jerusalem.
MSG
34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killer of prophets, abuser of the messengers of God! How often I've longed to gather your children, gather your children like a hen, Her brood safe under her wings— but you refused and turned away!
AMP
34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her ! How often I have wanted to gather your children together , just as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were not willing!
MSG
35And now it's too late: You won't see me again until the day you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of God.'"
AMP
35Listen carefully: your house is left to you desolate ; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
