1At about that same time Jesus left the house and sat on the beach.

2In no time at all a crowd gathered along the shoreline, forcing him to get into a boat.

2Y se le juntaron grandes multitudes, por lo cual, subiendo a una barca, se sentó;° y toda la muchedumbre estaba de pie en la playa.

3Using the boat as a pulpit, he addressed his congregation, telling stories. "What do you make of this? A farmer planted seed.

3Y les habló muchas cosas en parábolas, diciendo: He aquí el sembrador salió a sembrar.

4As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it.

4Y cuando iba sembrando, unas semillas° cayeron junto al camino, y llegaron las aves y se las comieron.

5Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn't put down roots,

6so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly.

7Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled by the weeds.

8Some fell on good earth, and produced a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.

9"Are you listening to this? Really listening?" Why Tell Stories?

10The disciples came up and asked, "Why do you tell stories?"

10Y acercándose los discípulos, le dijeron: ¿Por qué les hablas en parábolas?

11He replied, "You've been given insight into God's kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn't been given to them.

11Él respondiendo, dijo: Porque a vosotros ha sido dado a conocer los misterios del reino de los cielos, pero a ellos no ha sido dado.

12Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears.

12Porque al que tiene, le será dado, y tendrá más que suficiente; pero al que no tiene, aun lo que tiene le será quitado.°

13That's why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward receptive insight. In their present state they can stare till doomsday and not see it, listen till they're blue in the face and not get it.

13Por esto les hablo en parábolas, porque viendo no ven, y oyendo no oyen, ni entienden.

14I don't want Isaiah's forecast repeated all over again: Your ears are open but you don't hear a thing. Your eyes are awake but you don't see a thing.

14Y se cumple en ellos la profecía de Isaías, que dice: De oído oiréis, y no entenderéis,° Y viendo veréis, y no percibiréis:°

15The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won't have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won't have to look, so they won't have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them.

15Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha engrosado,° Y con los oídos oyen pesadamente,° Y han cerrado sus ojos. No sea que vean con los ojos, Y oigan con los oídos, Y entiendan con el corazón, Y se conviertan, y Yo° los sane.°

16"But you have God-blessed eyes—eyes that see! And God-blessed ears—ears that hear!

16Pero bienaventurados vuestros ojos porque ven, y vuestros oídos porque oyen.

17A lot of people, prophets and humble believers among them, would have given anything to see what you are seeing, to hear what you are hearing, but never had the chance.

17Porque de cierto os digo que muchos profetas y justos desearon ver lo que veis, y no lo vieron; y oír lo que oís, y no lo oyeron.°

18"Study this story of the farmer planting seed.

18Oíd pues vosotros la parábola del que sembró:

19When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn't take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person's heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.

19De todo el que oye la palabra del reino y no la entiende, viene el maligno y arrebata lo que fue sembrado en su corazón. Éste es el que fue sembrado junto al camino.

20"The seed cast in the gravel—this is the person who hears and instantly responds with enthusiasm.

20Y el que fue sembrado en los pedregales, éste es el que oye la palabra y al momento la recibe con gozo,

21But there is no soil of character, and so when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.

21pero no tiene raíz en sí, sino que es de corta duración, y llegada una tribulación o persecución por causa de la palabra, al momento se escandaliza.

22"The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.

22Y el que fue sembrado entre espinas, éste es el que oye la palabra, pero el afán del mundo y el engaño de la riqueza° ahogan la palabra y se hace infructuosa.

23"The seed cast on good earth is the person who hears and takes in the News, and then produces a harvest beyond his wildest dreams."

23Pero el que fue sembrado en tierra buena, éste es el que oye y entiende la palabra; el que también da fruto, y produce cual a ciento por uno, cual a sesenta, y cual a treinta por uno.

24He told another story. "God's kingdom is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field.

24Otra parábola les propuso, diciendo: El reino de los cielos es comparado a un hombre que sembró buena semilla en su campo.

25That night, while his hired men were asleep, his enemy sowed thistles all through the wheat and slipped away before dawn.

25Pero, al dormir los hombres, vino su enemigo y sobresembró cizaña en medio del trigo, y se fue.

26When the first green shoots appeared and the grain began to form, the thistles showed up, too.

26Y cuando germinó el tallo y dio fruto, entonces apareció también la cizaña.

27"The farmhands came to the farmer and said, 'Master, that was clean seed you planted, wasn't it? Where did these thistles come from?'

27Y acercándose los siervos del padre de familia, le dijeron: Señor, ¿acaso no sembraste buena semilla en tu campo? ¿De dónde, pues, tiene cizaña?

28"He answered, 'Some enemy did this.' "The farmhands asked, 'Should we weed out the thistles?'

28Y él les dijo: Algún enemigo hizo esto. Le dicen los siervos: ¿Quieres, pues, que vayamos y la recojamos?

29"He said, 'No, if you weed the thistles, you'll pull up the wheat, too.
BTX
29Pero él dice: No, no sea que recogiendo la cizaña arranquéis con ella el trigo.
MSG
30Let them grow together until harvest time. Then I'll instruct the harvesters to pull up the thistles and tie them in bundles for the fire, then gather the wheat and put it in the barn.' "

30Dejad crecer juntamente lo uno y lo otro hasta la siega, y en tiempo de la siega diré a los segadores: Recoged primero la cizaña y atadla en manojos para quemarla totalmente, pero el trigo reunidlo en mi granero.

31Another story. "God's kingdom is like a pine nut that a farmer plants.

31Les propuso otra parábola, diciendo: El reino de los cielos es semejante a una semilla de mostaza que un hombre tomó y sembró en su campo,

32It is quite small as seeds go, but in the course of years it grows into a huge pine tree, and eagles build nests in it."

32la cual en verdad es más pequeña que todas las semillas, pero cuando ha crecido es la mayor de las hortalizas, y llega a ser árbol,° hasta el punto que vienen las aves del cielo y anidan en sus ramas.°

33Another story. "God's kingdom is like yeast that a woman works into the dough for dozens of loaves of barley bread—and waits while the dough rises."

33Otra parábola les habló: El reino de los cielos es semejante a la levadura° que una mujer tomó y la escondió en tres medidas de harina, hasta que todo fue leudado.

34All Jesus did that day was tell stories—a long storytelling afternoon.

34Todas estas cosas habló Jesús a las multitudes en parábolas, y sin parábola nada les hablaba,

35His storytelling fulfilled the prophecy: I will open my mouth and tell stories; I will bring out into the open things hidden since the world's first day.

35para que se cumpliera lo dicho por el profeta, cuando dice: Abriré mi boca en parábolas, Declararé cosas escondidas desde la creación.°

36Jesus dismissed the congregation and went into the house. His disciples came in and said, "Explain to us that story of the thistles in the field."

36Habiendo despedido entonces a las multitudes, entró en la casa, y se acercaron a Él sus discípulos, diciendo: Decláranos° la parábola de la cizaña del campo.

37So he explained. "The farmer who sows the pure seed is the Son of Man.

37Él respondió y dijo: El que siembra la buena semilla es el Hijo del Hombre,

38The field is the world, the pure seeds are subjects of the kingdom, the thistles are subjects of the Devil,

38el campo es el mundo, la buena semilla son los hijos del reino, y la cizaña son los hijos del maligno,

39and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, the curtain of history. The harvest hands are angels.

40"The picture of thistles pulled up and burned is a scene from the final act.

40Por tanto, así como la cizaña es recogida y consumida con el fuego, así será en la consumación del siglo.

41The Son of Man will send his angels, weed out the thistles from his kingdom,

41Enviará el Hijo del Hombre a sus ángeles, y recogerán de su reino a todos los que causan tropiezos y a los que hacen iniquidad,

42pitch them in the trash, and be done with them. They are going to complain to high heaven, but nobody is going to listen.

43At the same time, ripe, holy lives will mature and adorn the kingdom of their Father.

43Entonces los justos resplandecerán como el sol en el reino de su Padre. El que tiene oídos,° oiga.

44"God's kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field for years and then accidently found by a trespasser. The finder is ecstatic—what a find!—and proceeds to sell everything he owns to raise money and buy that field.

44El° reino de los cielos es semejante a un tesoro° escondido en un campo, que al hallarlo un hombre, lo encubre, y por el gozo de ello,° va y vende todo lo que tiene, y compra aquel campo.

45"Or, God's kingdom is like a jewel merchant on the hunt for excellent pearls.

45También el reino de los cielos es semejante a un mercader° en busca de buenas perlas,

46Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.

46y cuando encontró una perla muy preciosa, fue y vendió° todo lo que tenía y la compró.

47"Or, God's kingdom is like a fishnet cast into the sea, catching all kinds of fish.

47También el reino de los cielos es semejante a una jábega° que, echada al mar, recoge de toda suerte de peces,°

48When it is full, it is hauled onto the beach. The good fish are picked out and put in a tub; those unfit to eat are thrown away.

48la cual, una vez llena, la sacan a la orilla, y sentándose, recogen los buenos° en canastos, y echan fuera los malos.°
MSG
49That's how it will be when the curtain comes down on history. The angels will come and cull the bad fish

49Así será en la consumación del siglo. Saldrán los ángeles y separarán a los malvados de entre los justos,

50and throw them in the garbage. There will be a lot of desperate complaining, but it won't do any good."

50y los echarán al horno de fuego. Allí será el llanto y el crujido de los dientes.

51Jesus asked, "Are you starting to get a handle on all this?" They answered, "Yes."

51¿Entendisteis° todas estas cosas? Le dicen: Sí.
MSG
52He said, "Then you see how every student well-trained in God's kingdom is like the owner of a general store who can put his hands on anything you need, old or new, exactly when you need it."

52Él les dijo: Por esto, todo escriba docto en el reino de los cielos es semejante a un padre de familia, que de su tesoro va sacando° cosas nuevas y cosas viejas.

53When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there,

53Y aconteció que cuando Jesús hubo acabado de decir estas parábolas, se fue de allí.

54returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. "We had no idea he was this good!" they said. "How did he get so wise, get such ability?"

54Y llegando a su propia tierra, les enseñaba en la sinagoga de ellos, de manera que quedaban atónitos, y decían: ¿De dónde tiene éste esta sabiduría y estos poderes° milagrosos?

55But in the next breath they were cutting him down: "We've known him since he was a kid; he's the carpenter's son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas.

55¿No es éste el hijo del carpintero? ¿No se llama su madre Miriam,° y sus hermanos Jacobo y José y Simón y Judas?

56All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?"

56¿No están acaso todas sus hermanas frente a nosotros? ¿De dónde, pues, tiene éste todas estas cosas?

57They got their noses all out of joint.
BTX
57Y se escandalizaban a causa° de Él. Jesús les dijo: No hay profeta sin honra sino en su° tierra y en su casa.°
MSG
58But Jesus said, "A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family." He didn't do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.

58Y no hizo allí muchos milagros por causa de la incredulidad de ellos.
