1At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, "Who gets the highest rank in God's kingdom?"

1At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

2For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room,

2He called a child over, placed it in their midst,

3and said, "I'm telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in.

3and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

4Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom.
NABRE
4Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
5What's more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it's the same as receiving me.

5And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

6"But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you'll soon wish you hadn't. You'd be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.

6"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

7Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don't have to make it worse—and it's doomsday to you if you do.

7Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come!

8"If your hand or your foot gets in the way of God, chop it off and throw it away. You're better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owners of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire.

8If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire.

9And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You're better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.

9And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna.

10"Watch that you don't treat a single one of these childlike believers arrogantly. You realize, don't you, that their personal angels are constantly in touch with my Father in heaven?

10"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.
MSG
12"Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn't he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?
NABRE
12What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?

13And if he finds it, doesn't he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?
NABRE
13And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
MSG
14Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn't want to lose even one of these simple believers.
NABRE
14In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.
MSG
15"If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him—work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend.
NABRE
15"If your brother sins , go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.
MSG
16If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again.
NABRE
16If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.'

17If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.

17If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.

18"Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.

18Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.
NABRE
19Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.
MSG
20And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."
NABRE
20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"
NABRE
21Then Peter approaching asked him, "Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?"
MSG
22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.
NABRE
22Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
MSG
23"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants.
NABRE
23That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
MSG
24As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars.
NABRE
24When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
MSG
25He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
NABRE
25Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt.
MSG
26"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
NABRE
26At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.'
MSG
27Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
NABRE
27Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan.
MSG
28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'
NABRE
28When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, 'Pay back what you owe.'

29"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
NABRE
29Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
MSG
30But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid.
NABRE
30But he refused. Instead, he had him put in prison until he paid back the debt.
MSG
31When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
NABRE
31Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair.
MSG
32"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy.
NABRE
32His master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
MSG
33Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?'
NABRE
33Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?'
MSG
34The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt.
NABRE
34Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt.
MSG
35And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."
NABRE
35So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart."
