Mt 21MateusMt 23
MSG
1Jesus responded by telling still more stories.
WEB
1Jesus answered and spoke again in parables to them, saying,
MSG
2"God's kingdom," he said, "is like a king who threw a wedding banquet for his son.
WEB
2“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,
MSG
3He sent out servants to call in all the invited guests. And they wouldn't come!
WEB
3and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come.
MSG
4"He sent out another round of servants, instructing them to tell the guests, 'Look, everything is on the table, the prime rib is ready for carving. Come to the feast!'
WEB
4Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the marriage feast!”’
MSG
5"They only shrugged their shoulders and went off, one to weed his garden, another to work in his shop.
WEB
5But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,
MSG
6The rest, with nothing better to do, beat up on the messengers and then killed them.
WEB
6and the rest grabbed his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.
MSG
7The king was outraged and sent his soldiers to destroy those thugs and level their city.
WEB
7When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
MSG
8"Then he told his servants, 'We have a wedding banquet all prepared but no guests. The ones I invited weren't up to it.
WEB
8“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.
MSG
9Go out into the busiest intersections in town and invite anyone you find to the banquet.'
WEB
9Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the marriage feast.’
MSG
10The servants went out on the streets and rounded up everyone they laid eyes on, good and bad, regardless. And so the banquet was on—every place filled.
WEB
10Those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.
MSG
11"When the king entered and looked over the scene, he spotted a man who wasn't properly dressed.
WEB
11But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing,
MSG
12He said to him, 'Friend, how dare you come in here looking like that!' The man was speechless.
WEB
12and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless.
MSG
13Then the king told his servants, 'Get him out of here—fast. Tie him up and ship him to hell. And make sure he doesn't get back in.'
WEB
13Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness; there is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’
MSG
14"That's what I mean when I say, 'Many get invited; only a few make it.' "
WEB
14For many are called, but few chosen.”
MSG
15That's when the Pharisees plotted a way to trap him into saying something damaging.
WEB
15Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.
MSG
16They sent their disciples, with a few of Herod's followers mixed in, to ask, "Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don't pander to your students.
WEB
16They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach, for you aren’t partial to anyone.
MSG
17So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
WEB
17Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
MSG
18Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said, "Why are you playing these games with me? Why are you trying to trap me?
WEB
18But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?
MSG
19Do you have a coin? Let me see it." They handed him a silver piece.
WEB
19Show me the tax money.” They brought to him a denarius.
MSG
20"This engraving—who does it look like? And whose name is on it?"
WEB
20He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
MSG
21They said, "Caesar." "Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his."
WEB
21They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
MSG
22The Pharisees were speechless. They went off shaking their heads.
WEB
22When they heard it, they marveled, and left him, and went away.
MSG
23That same day, Sadducees approached him. This is the party that denies any possibility of resurrection.
WEB
23On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,
MSG
24They asked, "Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is obligated to marry his widow and get her with child.
WEB
24saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.’
MSG
25Here's a case where there were seven brothers. The first brother married and died, leaving no child, and his wife passed to his brother.
WEB
25Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
MSG
26The second brother also left her childless, then the third—and on and on, all seven.
WEB
26In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh.
MSG
27Eventually the wife died.
WEB
27After them all, the woman died.
MSG
28Now here's our question: At the resurrection, whose wife is she? She was a wife to each of them."
WEB
28In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”
MSG
29Jesus answered, "You're off base on two counts: You don't know your Bibles, and you don't know how God works.
WEB
29But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
MSG
30At the resurrection we're beyond marriage. As with the angels, all our ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God.
WEB
30For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.
MSG
31And regarding your speculation on whether the dead are raised or not, don't you read your Bibles? The grammar is clear: God says,
WEB
31But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
MSG
32'I am—not was—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.' The living God defines himself not as the God of dead men, but of the living."
WEB
32‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
MSG
33Hearing this exchange the crowd was much impressed.
WEB
33When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
MSG
34When the Pharisees heard how he had bested the Sadducees, they gathered their forces for an assault.
WEB
34But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.
MSG
35One of their religion scholars spoke for them, posing a question they hoped would show him up:
WEB
35One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.
MSG
36"Teacher, which command in God's Law is the most important?"
WEB
36“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
MSG
37Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.'
WEB
37Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
MSG
38This is the most important, the first on any list.
WEB
38This is the first and great commandment.
MSG
39But there is a second to set alongside it: 'Love others as well as you love yourself.'
WEB
39A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
MSG
40These two commands are pegs; everything in God's Law and the Prophets hangs from them."
WEB
40The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
MSG
41As the Pharisees were regrouping, Jesus caught them off balance with his own test question:
WEB
41Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
MSG
42"What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said, "David's son."
WEB
42saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”
MSG
43Jesus replied, "Well, if the Christ is David's son, how do you explain that David, under inspiration, named Christ his 'Master'?
WEB
43He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
MSG
44God said to my Master, "Sit here at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool."
WEB
44‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?’
MSG
45"Now if David calls him 'Master,' how can he at the same time be his son?"
WEB
45“If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
MSG
46That stumped them, literalists that they were. Unwilling to risk losing face again in one of these public verbal exchanges, they quit asking questions for good.
WEB
46No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.
