1"God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom.
AMP
1"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
MSG
2Five were silly and five were smart.
AMP
2Five of them were foolish , and five were wise .
MSG
3The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil.
AMP
3For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take any oil with them,
MSG
4The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.
AMP
4but the wise took flasks of oil along with their lamps.
MSG
5The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.
AMP
5Now while the bridegroom was delayed, they all began to nod off, and they fell asleep.
MSG
6"In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!'
AMP
6But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look! The bridegroom ! Go out to meet him.'
MSG
7"The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready.
AMP
7Then all those virgins got up and put their own lamps in order .
MSG
8The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.'
AMP
8But the foolish virgins said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.'
MSG
9"They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.'
AMP
9But the wise replied, 'No, otherwise there will not be enough for us and for you, too; go instead to the dealers and buy oil for yourselves.'
MSG
10"They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.
AMP
10But while they were going away to buy oil, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut and locked.
MSG
11"Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.'
AMP
11Later the others also came, and said, 'Lord, Lord, open for us.'
MSG
12"He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.'
AMP
12But He replied, 'I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I do not know you .'
MSG
13"So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.
AMP
13Therefore, be on the alert , for you do not know the day nor the hour .
MSG
14"It's also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities.
AMP
14"For it is just like a man who was about to take a journey, and he called his servants together and entrusted them with his possessions.
MSG
15To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left.
AMP
15To one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and then he went on his journey.
MSG
16Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment.
AMP
16The one who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he gained five more.
MSG
17The second did the same.
AMP
17Likewise the one who had two gained two more.
MSG
18But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master's money.
AMP
18But the one who had received the one went and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
MSG
19"After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them.
AMP
19"Now after a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
MSG
20The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment.
AMP
20And the one who had received the five talents came and brought him five more, saying, 'Master, you entrusted to me five talents. See, I have gained five more talents.'
MSG
21His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
AMP
21His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.'
MSG
22"The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment.
AMP
22"Also the one who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more talents.'
MSG
23His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
AMP
23His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.'
MSG
24"The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error.
AMP
24"The one who had received one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a harsh and demanding man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter seed.
MSG
25I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.'
AMP
25So I was afraid , and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is your own.'
MSG
26"The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least?
AMP
26"But his master answered him, 'You wicked, lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter seed.
MSG
27The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.
AMP
27Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers, and at my return I would have received my money back with interest.
MSG
28" 'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb.
AMP
28So take the talent away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.'
MSG—
AMP
29"For to everyone who has , more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have , even what he does have will be taken away.
MSG
30Throw him out into utter darkness.'
AMP
30And throw out the worthless servant into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth .
MSG
31"When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne.
AMP
31"But when the Son of Man comes in His glory and majesty and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
MSG
32Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats,
AMP
32All the nations will be gathered before Him ; and He will separate them from one another, as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats;
MSG
33putting sheep to his right and goats to his left.
AMP
33and He will put the sheep on His right , and the goats on His left .
MSG
34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what's coming to you in this kingdom. It's been ready for you since the world's foundation.
AMP
34"Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you blessed of My Father , inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
MSG
35And here's why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room,
AMP
35For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in;
MSG
36I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.'
AMP
36I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me ; I was in prison, and you came to Me .'
MSG
37"Then those 'sheep' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink?
AMP
37Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?
MSG
38And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?'
AMP
38And when did we see You as a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
MSG—
AMP
39And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?'
MSG
40Then the King will say, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.'
AMP
40The King will answer and say to them, 'I assure you and most solemnly say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it for Me.'
MSG
41"Then he will turn to the 'goats,' the ones on his left, and say, 'Get out, worthless goats! You're good for nothing but the fires of hell.
AMP
41"Then He will say to those on His left, 'Leave Me, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels (demons);
MSG
42And why? Because— I was hungry and you gave me no meal, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
AMP
42for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink;
MSG
43I was homeless and you gave me no bed, I was shivering and you gave me no clothes, Sick and in prison, and you never visited.'
AMP
43I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me .'
MSG
44"Then those 'goats' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn't help?'
AMP
44Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or as a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You?'
MSG
45"He will answer them, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.'
AMP
45Then He will reply to them, 'I assure you and most solemnly say to you, to the extent that you did not do it for one of the least of these , you did not do it for Me.'
MSG
46"Then those 'goats' will be herded to their eternal doom, but the 'sheep' to their eternal reward."
AMP
46Then these will go away into eternal (unending) punishment, but those who are righteous and in right standing with God into eternal (unending) life."
