Mt 24MateusMt 26
MSG
1"God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom.
NABRE
1"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
MSG
2Five were silly and five were smart.
NABRE
2Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
MSG
3The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil.
NABRE
3The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them,
MSG
4The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.
NABRE
4but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
MSG
5The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.
NABRE
5Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
MSG
6"In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!'
NABRE
6At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
MSG
7"The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready.
NABRE
7Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
MSG
8The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.'
NABRE
8The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'
MSG
9"They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.'
NABRE
9But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.'
MSG
10"They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.
NABRE
10While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
MSG
11"Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.'
NABRE
11Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!'
MSG
12"He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.'
NABRE
12But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.'
MSG
13"So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.
NABRE
13Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
MSG
14"It's also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities.
NABRE
14"It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
MSG
15To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left.
NABRE
15To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one—to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately
MSG
16Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment.
NABRE
16the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five.
MSG
17The second did the same.
NABRE
17Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
MSG
18But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master's money.
NABRE
18But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money.
MSG
19"After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them.
NABRE
19After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
MSG
20The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment.
NABRE
20The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.'
MSG
21His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
NABRE
21His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'
MSG
22"The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment.
NABRE
22the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.'
MSG
23His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
NABRE
23His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'
MSG
24"The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error.
NABRE
24Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, 'Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter;
MSG
25I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.'
NABRE
25so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.'
MSG
26"The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least?
NABRE
26His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter?
MSG
27The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.
NABRE
27Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
MSG
28" 'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb.
NABRE
28Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
MSG
NABRE
29For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
MSG
30Throw him out into utter darkness.'
NABRE
30And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'
MSG
31"When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne.
NABRE
31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne,
MSG
32Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats,
NABRE
32and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
MSG
33putting sheep to his right and goats to his left.
NABRE
33He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
MSG
34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what's coming to you in this kingdom. It's been ready for you since the world's foundation.
NABRE
34Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
MSG
35And here's why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room,
NABRE
35For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,
MSG
36I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.'
NABRE
36naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'
MSG
37"Then those 'sheep' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink?
NABRE
37Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
MSG
38And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?'
NABRE
38When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
MSG
NABRE
39When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'
MSG
40Then the King will say, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.'
NABRE
40And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'
MSG
41"Then he will turn to the 'goats,' the ones on his left, and say, 'Get out, worthless goats! You're good for nothing but the fires of hell.
NABRE
41Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
MSG
42And why? Because— I was hungry and you gave me no meal, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
NABRE
42For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
MSG
43I was homeless and you gave me no bed, I was shivering and you gave me no clothes, Sick and in prison, and you never visited.'
NABRE
43a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'
MSG
44"Then those 'goats' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn't help?'
NABRE
44Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'
MSG
45"He will answer them, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.'
NABRE
45He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'
MSG
46"Then those 'goats' will be herded to their eternal doom, but the 'sheep' to their eternal reward."
NABRE
46And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
