1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem village, Judah territory—this was during Herod's kingship—a band of scholars arrived in Jerusalem from the East.
AMP
1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king (Herod the Great), magi (wise men) from the east came to Jerusalem, asking,
MSG
2They asked around, "Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We're on pilgrimage to worship him."
AMP
2"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him."
MSG
3When word of their inquiry got to Herod, he was terrified—and not Herod alone, but most of Jerusalem as well.
AMP
3When Herod the king heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
MSG
4Herod lost no time. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked, "Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?"
AMP
4So he called together all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) was to be born.
MSG
5They told him, "Bethlehem, Judah territory. The prophet Micah wrote it plainly:
AMP
5They replied to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what has been written by the prophet :
MSG
6It's you, Bethlehem, in Judah's land, no longer bringing up the rear. From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule my people, my Israel."
AMP
6'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not in any way least among the leaders of Judah; For from you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'"
MSG
7Herod then arranged a secret meeting with the scholars from the East. Pretending to be as devout as they were, he got them to tell him exactly when the birth-announcement star appeared.
AMP
7Then Herod secretly sent for the magi and learned from them the time the star appeared.
MSG
8Then he told them the prophecy about Bethlehem, and said, "Go find this child. Leave no stone unturned. As soon as you find him, send word and I'll join you at once in your worship."
AMP
8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him."
MSG
9Instructed by the king, they set off. Then the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child.
AMP
9After hearing the king, they went their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the young Child was.
MSG
10They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time!
AMP
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
MSG
11They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh.
AMP
11And after entering the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, after opening their treasure chests, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
MSG
12In a dream, they were warned not to report back to Herod. So they worked out another route, left the territory without being seen, and returned to their own country.
AMP
12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
MSG
13After the scholars were gone, God's angel showed up again in Joseph's dream and commanded, "Get up. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. Stay until further notice. Herod is on the hunt for this child, and wants to kill him."
AMP
13Now when they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod intends to search for the Child in order to destroy Him."
MSG
14Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother under cover of darkness. They were out of town and well on their way by daylight.
AMP
14So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.
MSG
15They lived in Egypt until Herod's death. This Egyptian exile fulfilled what Hosea had preached: "I called my son out of Egypt."
AMP
15He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet : "Out of Egypt I called My Son."
MSG
16Herod, when he realized that the scholars had tricked him, flew into a rage. He commanded the murder of every little boy two years old and under who lived in Bethlehem and its surrounding hills. (He determined that age from information he'd gotten from the scholars.)
AMP
16Then Herod, when he realized that he had been tricked by the magi, was extremely angry, and he sent and put to death all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that area who were two years old and under, according to the date which he had learned from the magi.
MSG
17That's when Jeremiah's sermon was fulfilled:
AMP
17Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
MSG
18A sound was heard in Ramah, weeping and much lament. Rachel weeping for her children, Rachel refusing all solace, Her children gone, dead and buried.
AMP
18"A voice was heard inRamah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; She refused to be comforted, Because they were no more."
MSG
19Later, when Herod died, God's angel appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt:
AMP
19But when Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,
MSG
20"Up, take the child and his mother and return to Israel. All those out to murder the child are dead."
AMP
20"Get up! Take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead."
MSG
21Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother, and reentered Israel.
AMP
21Then Joseph got up, and took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
MSG
22When he heard, though, that Archelaus had succeeded his father, Herod, as king in Judea, he was afraid to go there. But then Joseph was directed in a dream to go to the hills of Galilee.
AMP
22But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod , he was afraid to go there. Then being warned by God in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee,
MSG
23On arrival, he settled in the village of Nazareth. This move was a fulfillment of the prophetic words, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
AMP
23and went and settled in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene."
