Mt 1MateusMt 3
MSG
1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem village, Judah territory—this was during Herod's kingship—a band of scholars arrived in Jerusalem from the East.
WEB
1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
MSG
2They asked around, "Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We're on pilgrimage to worship him."
WEB
2“Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”
MSG
3When word of their inquiry got to Herod, he was terrified—and not Herod alone, but most of Jerusalem as well.
WEB
3When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
MSG
4Herod lost no time. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked, "Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?"
WEB
4Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.
MSG
5They told him, "Bethlehem, Judah territory. The prophet Micah wrote it plainly:
WEB
5They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,
MSG
6It's you, Bethlehem, in Judah's land, no longer bringing up the rear. From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule my people, my Israel."
WEB
6‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”
MSG
7Herod then arranged a secret meeting with the scholars from the East. Pretending to be as devout as they were, he got them to tell him exactly when the birth-announcement star appeared.
WEB
7Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
MSG
8Then he told them the prophecy about Bethlehem, and said, "Go find this child. Leave no stone unturned. As soon as you find him, send word and I'll join you at once in your worship."
WEB
8He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”
MSG
9Instructed by the king, they set off. Then the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child.
WEB
9They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
MSG
10They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time!
WEB
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
MSG
11They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh.
WEB
11They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
MSG
12In a dream, they were warned not to report back to Herod. So they worked out another route, left the territory without being seen, and returned to their own country.
WEB
12Being warned in a dream that they shouldn’t return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
MSG
13After the scholars were gone, God's angel showed up again in Joseph's dream and commanded, "Get up. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. Stay until further notice. Herod is on the hunt for this child, and wants to kill him."
WEB
13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”
MSG
14Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother under cover of darkness. They were out of town and well on their way by daylight.
WEB
14He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,
MSG
15They lived in Egypt until Herod's death. This Egyptian exile fulfilled what Hosea had preached: "I called my son out of Egypt."
WEB
15and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
MSG
16Herod, when he realized that the scholars had tricked him, flew into a rage. He commanded the murder of every little boy two years old and under who lived in Bethlehem and its surrounding hills. (He determined that age from information he'd gotten from the scholars.)
WEB
16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.
MSG
17That's when Jeremiah's sermon was fulfilled:
WEB
17Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
MSG
18A sound was heard in Ramah, weeping and much lament. Rachel weeping for her children, Rachel refusing all solace, Her children gone, dead and buried.
WEB
18“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; she wouldn’t be comforted, because they are no more.”
MSG
19Later, when Herod died, God's angel appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt:
WEB
19But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
MSG
20"Up, take the child and his mother and return to Israel. All those out to murder the child are dead."
WEB
20“Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.”
MSG
21Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother, and reentered Israel.
WEB
21He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
MSG
22When he heard, though, that Archelaus had succeeded his father, Herod, as king in Judea, he was afraid to go there. But then Joseph was directed in a dream to go to the hills of Galilee.
WEB
22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,
MSG
23On arrival, he settled in the village of Nazareth. This move was a fulfillment of the prophetic words, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
WEB
23and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
