1In the second year of his reign, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream which left his spirit no rest and robbed him of his sleep.

1In the second year of his reign, King Nebuchadnezzar started having dreams that disturbed him deeply. He couldn't sleep.

2So he ordered that the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and Chaldeans be summoned to interpret the dream for him. When they came and presented themselves to the king,

2He called in all the Babylonian magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and fortunetellers to interpret his dreams for him. When they came and lined up before the king,

3he said to them, "I had a dream which will allow my spirit no rest until I know what it means."
MSG
3he said to them, "I had a dream that I can't get out of my mind. I can't sleep until I know what it means."

4The Chaldeans answered the king in Aramaic: "O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream and we will give its meaning."
MSG
4The fortunetellers, speaking in the Aramaic language, said, "Long live the king! Tell us the dream and we will interpret it."

5The king answered the Chaldeans, "This is what I have decided: unless you tell me the dream and its meaning, you shall be cut to pieces and your houses made into a refuse heap.

5The king answered the fortunetellers, "This is my decree: If you can't tell me both the dream itself and its interpretation, I'll have you ripped to pieces, limb from limb, and your homes torn down.

6But if you tell me the dream and its meaning, you shall receive from me gifts and presents and great honors. Therefore tell me the dream and its meaning."

6But if you tell me both the dream and its interpretation, I'll lavish you with gifts and honors. So go to it: Tell me the dream and its interpretation."

7Again they answered, "Let the king tell his servants the dream and we will give its meaning."

7They answered, "If it please your majesty, tell us the dream. We'll give the interpretation."
NABRE
8But the king replied: "I know for certain that you are bargaining for time, since you know what I have decided.
MSG
8But the king said, "I know what you're up to—you're just playing for time. You know you're up a tree.
NABRE
9If you do not tell me the dream, there can be but one decree for you. You have conspired to present a false and deceitful interpretation to me until the crisis is past. Tell me the dream, therefore, that I may be sure that you can also give its correct interpretation."

9You know that if you can't tell me my dream, you're doomed. I see right through you—you're going to cook up some fancy stories and confuse the issue until I change my mind. Nothing doing! First tell me the dream, then I'll know that you're on the up and up with the interpretation and not just blowing smoke in my eyes."

10The Chaldeans answered the king: "There is not a man on earth who can do what you ask, O king; never has any king, however great and mighty, asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or Chaldean.

10The fortunetellers said, "Nobody anywhere can do what you ask. And no king, great or small, has ever demanded anything like this from any magician, enchanter, or fortuneteller.

11What you demand, O king, is too difficult; there is no one who can tell it to the king except the gods, who do not dwell among people of flesh."
MSG
11What you're asking is impossible unless some god or goddess should reveal it—and they don't hang around with people like us."

12At this the king became violently angry and ordered all the wise men of Babylon to be put to death.
MSG
12That set the king off. He lost his temper and ordered the whole company of Babylonian wise men killed.

13When the decree was issued that the wise men should be slain, Daniel and his companions were also sought out.

13When the death warrant was issued, Daniel and his companions were included. They also were marked for execution.

14Then Daniel prudently took counsel with Arioch, the chief of the king's guard, who had set out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

14When Arioch, chief of the royal guards, was making arrangements for the execution, Daniel wisely took him aside

15He asked Arioch, the officer of the king, "What is the reason for this harsh order from the king?" When Arioch told him,

15and quietly asked what was going on: "Why this all of a sudden?"After Arioch filled in the background,

16Daniel went and asked for time from the king, that he might give him the interpretation.

16Daniel went to the king and asked for a little time so that he could interpret the dream.

17Daniel went home and informed his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

17Daniel then went home and told his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what was going on.

18that they might implore the mercy of the God of heaven in regard to this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

18He asked them to pray to the God of heaven for mercy in solving this mystery so that the four of them wouldn't be killed along with the whole company of Babylonian wise men.

19During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven:

20"Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,for wisdom and power are his.

20saying,"Blessed be the name of God,forever and ever.He knows all, does all:

21He causes the changes of the times and seasons,establishes kings and deposes them.He gives wisdom to the wiseand knowledge to those who understand.

21He changes the seasons and guides history,He raises up kings and also brings them down,he provides both intelligence and discernment,

22He reveals deep and hidden thingsand knows what is in the darkness,for the light dwells with him.
MSG
22He opens up the depths, tells secrets,sees in the dark—light spills out of him!
NABRE
23To you, God of my ancestors,I give thanks and praise,because you have given me wisdom and power.Now you have shown me what we asked of you,you have made known to us the king's dream."
MSG
23God of all my ancestors, all thanks! all praise!You made me wise and strong.And now you've shown us what we asked for.You've solved the king's mystery."

24So Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not put the wise men of Babylon to death. Bring me before the king, and I will tell him the interpretation of the dream." Arioch quickly brought Daniel to the king and said,

24So Daniel went back to Arioch, who had been put in charge of the execution. He said, "Call off the execution! Take me to the king and I'll interpret his dream."

25"I have found a man among the Judean exiles who can give the interpretation to the king."

25Arioch didn't lose a minute. He ran to the king, bringing Daniel with him, and said, "I've found a man from the exiles of Judah who can interpret the king's dream!"

26The king asked Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, "Can you tell me the dream that I had and its meaning?"
MSG
26The king asked Daniel (renamed in Babylonian, Belteshazzar), "Are you sure you can do this—tell me the dream I had and interpret it for me?"

27In the king's presence Daniel made this reply: "The mystery about which the king has inquired, the wise men, enchanters, magicians, and diviners could not explain to the king.

27Daniel answered the king, "No mere human can solve the king's mystery, I don't care who it is—no wise man, enchanter, magician, diviner.

28But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what is to happen in the last days; this was your dream, the visions you saw as you lay in bed.

28But there is a God in heaven who solves mysteries, and he has solved this one. He is letting King Nebuchadnezzar in on what is going to happen in the days ahead. This is the dream you had when you were lying on your bed, the vision that filled your mind:

29To you in your bed there came thoughts about what should happen in the future, and he who reveals mysteries showed you what is to be.

29"While you were stretched out on your bed, O king, thoughts came to you regarding what is coming in the days ahead. The Revealer of Mysteries showed you what will happen.

30To me also this mystery has been revealed; not that I am wiser than any other living person, but in order that its meaning may be made known to the king, that you may understand the thoughts of your own mind.

30But the interpretation is given through me, not because I'm any smarter than anyone else in the country, but so that you will know what it means, so that you will understand what you dreamed.

31"In your vision, O king, you saw a statue, very large and exceedingly bright, terrifying in appearance as it stood before you.

31"What you saw, O king, was a huge statue standing before you, striking in appearance. And terrifying.

32Its head was pure gold, its chest and arms were silver, its belly and thighs bronze,

32The head of the statue was pure gold, the chest and arms were silver, the belly and hips were bronze,

33its legs iron, its feet partly iron and partly clay.
MSG
33the legs were iron, and the feet were an iron-ceramic mixture.
NABRE
34While you watched, a stone was hewn from a mountain without a hand being put to it, and it struck its iron and clay feet, breaking them in pieces.
MSG
34While you were looking at this statue, a stone cut out of a mountain by an invisible hand hit the statue, smashing its iron-ceramic feet.
NABRE
35The iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold all crumbled at once, fine as the chaff on the threshing floor in summer, and the wind blew them away without leaving a trace. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

35Then the whole thing fell to pieces—iron, tile, bronze, silver, and gold, smashed to bits. It was like scraps of old newspapers in a vacant lot in a hot dry summer, blown every which way by the wind, scattered to oblivion. But the stone that hit the statue became a huge mountain, dominating the horizon.

36"This was the dream; the interpretation we shall also give in the king's presence.
MSG
36This was your dream."And now we'll interpret it for the king.
NABRE
37You, O king, are the king of kings; to you the God of heaven has given dominion and strength, power and glory;
MSG
37You, O king, are the most powerful king on earth. The God of heaven has given you the works: rule, power, strength, and glory.
NABRE
38human beings, wild beasts, and birds of the air, wherever they may dwell, he has handed over to you, making you ruler over them all; you are the head of gold.
MSG
38He has put you in charge of men and women, wild animals and birds, all over the world—you're the head ruler, you are the head of gold.
NABRE
39Another kingdom shall take your place, inferior to yours, then a third kingdom, of bronze, which shall rule over the whole earth.
MSG
39But your rule will be taken over by another kingdom, inferior to yours, and that one by a third, a bronze kingdom, but still ruling the whole land,
NABRE
40There shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron; it shall break in pieces and subdue all these others, just as iron breaks in pieces and crushes everything else.
MSG
40and after that by a fourth kingdom, iron-like in strength. Just as iron smashes things to bits, breaking and pulverizing, it will bust up the previous kingdoms.

41The feet and toes you saw, partly of clay and partly of iron, mean that it shall be a divided kingdom, but yet have some of the hardness of iron. As you saw the iron mixed with clay tile,

41"But then the feet and toes that ended up as a mixture of ceramic and iron will deteriorate into a mongrel kingdom with some remains of iron in it. Just as the toes of the feet were part ceramic and part iron,

42and the toes partly iron and partly clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.

42it will end up a mixed bag of the breakable and unbreakable.
NABRE
43The iron mixed with clay means that they shall seal their alliances by intermarriage, but they shall not stay united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
MSG
43That kingdom won't bond, won't hold together any more than iron and clay hold together.
NABRE
44In the lifetime of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed or delivered up to another people; rather, it shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and put an end to them, and it shall stand forever.
MSG
44"But throughout the history of these kingdoms, the God of heaven will be building a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will this kingdom ever fall under the domination of another. In the end it will crush the other kingdoms and finish them off and come through it all standing strong and eternal.

45That is the meaning of the stone you saw hewn from the mountain without a hand being put to it, which broke in pieces the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God has revealed to the king what shall be in the future; this is exactly what you dreamed, and its meaning is sure."

45It will be like the stone cut from the mountain by the invisible hand that crushed the iron, the bronze, the ceramic, the silver, and the gold."The great God has let the king know what will happen in the years to come. This is an accurate telling of the dream, and the interpretation is also accurate."

46Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell down and worshiped Daniel and ordered sacrifice and incense offered to him.

46When Daniel finished, King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face in awe before Daniel. He ordered the offering of sacrifices and burning of incense in Daniel's honor.

47To Daniel the king said, "Truly your God is the God of gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries; that is why you were able to reveal this mystery."

47He said to Daniel, "Your God is beyond question the God of all gods, the Master of all kings. And he solves all mysteries, I know, because you've solved this mystery."

48He advanced Daniel to a high post, gave him many generous presents, made him ruler of the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon.

48Then the king promoted Daniel to a high position in the kingdom, lavished him with gifts, and made him governor over the entire province of Babylon and the chief in charge of all the Babylonian wise men.

49At Daniel's request the king made Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego administrators of the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the king's court.
