1Três dias mais tarde, Ester vestiu-se com roupas reais e entrou no pátio interior, mesmo em frente à sala onde se encontrava o rei no seu trono.

1Three days later Esther dressed in her royal robes and took up a position in the inner court of the palace in front of the king's throne room. The king was on his throne facing the entrance.

2Quando ele viu a rainha Ester no pátio interior, deu-lhe as boas-vindas, estendendo para ela o cetro de ouro. Ester aproximou-se e tocou-lhe.

2When he noticed Queen Esther standing in the court, he was pleased to see her; the king extended the gold scepter in his hand. Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.

3Perguntou-lhe o rei: “Que pretendes, rainha Ester? Que queres pedir-me? Dar-te-ei o que me pedires, mesmo que seja metade do reino!”

3The king asked, "And what's your desire, Queen Esther? What do you want? Ask and it's yours—even if it's half my kingdom!"

4Ester respondeu: “Se o rei achasse bem, gostaria que viesse hoje, juntamente com Hamã, ao banquete que preparei para vos oferecer.”

4"If it please the king," said Esther, "let the king come with Haman to a dinner I've prepared for him."

5O rei voltou-se para os seus colaboradores: “Digam a Hamã que se despache!” E foram os dois ao banquete da rainha.

5"Get Haman at once," said the king, "so we can go to dinner with Esther."So the king and Haman joined Esther at the dinner she had arranged.

6Na altura de servirem os vinhos, o rei disse a Ester: “Diz-me o que pretendes realmente e eu to darei, mesmo que seja metade do reino!”

6As they were drinking the wine, the king said, "Now, what is it you want? Half of my kingdom isn't too much to ask! Just ask."

7“O meu pedido, o meu grande desejo é este:

7Esther answered, "Here's what I want.

8se o rei me ama e quer na verdade ser-me favorável, que venha de novo amanhã com Hamã ao banquete que preparei, e então explicarei tudo.”

8If the king favors me and is pleased to do what I desire and ask, let the king and Haman come again tomorrow to the dinner that I will fix for them. Then I'll give a straight answer to the king's question."

9Hamã era um homem feliz quando deixou o banquete; mas quando viu Mardoqueu ali junto ao portão do palácio, sem se levantar nem tremer na sua presença, ficou furioso.

9Haman left the palace that day happy, beaming. And then he saw Mordecai sitting at the King's Gate ignoring him, oblivious to him. Haman was furious with Mordecai.

10Conteve-se, contudo; foi para casa e juntou os amigos e Zerés sua mulher.

11Começou a gabar-se das suas riquezas, dos muitos filhos, das honras que o rei lhe tinha concedido e como se tornara na pessoa mais importante no reino a seguir ao soberano.

11and started bragging about how much money he had, his many sons, all the times the king had honored him, and his promotion to the highest position in the government.

12E não pôde deixar de acrescentar triunfalmente: “Sim, a própria rainha Ester me convidou, a mim e ao rei, só os dois, para um banquete que nos foi oferecido! Amanhã estamos de novo convidados!

12"On top of all that," Haman continued, "Queen Esther invited me to a private dinner she gave for the king, just the three of us. And she's invited me to another one tomorrow.

13No entanto, há uma coisa que me incomoda tremendamente, que é ver esse judeu Mardoqueu sentado ali mesmo em frente ao portão do palácio, e ele nem sequer se levanta quando eu passo!”

13But I can't enjoy any of it when I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the King's Gate."

14His wife Zeresh and all his friends said, "Build a gallows seventy-five feet high. First thing in the morning speak with the king; get him to order Mordecai hanged on it. Then happily go with the king to dinner."Haman liked that. He had the gallows built.
