1Quando Mardoqueu soube da ordem do rei contra os judeus, ele rasgou as suas roupas, se vestiu de luto e pôs cinza na sua cabeça. Depois foi para a cidade e chorou alto e amargamente.

1When Mordecai learned what had been done, he ripped his clothes to shreds and put on sackcloth and ashes. Then he went out in the streets of the city crying out in loud and bitter cries.

2Mas só foi até a entrada do palácio do rei porque não era permitido que alguém entrasse no palácio vestido de luto.

2He came only as far as the King's Gate, for no one dressed in sackcloth was allowed to enter the King's Gate.

3Em todas as províncias aonde chegasse a ordem do rei, havia muito choro e tristeza entre os judeus: jejuavam, choravam, se lamentavam. Muitos se deitavam no chão vestidos de luto e cobertos de cinza.

3As the king's order was posted in every province, there was loud lament among the Jews—fasting, weeping, wailing. And most of them stretched out on sackcloth and ashes.

4Os eunucos e as mulheres que serviam Ester foram vê-la e lhe contaram o que estava acontecendo a Mardoqueu. Ela começou a tremer muito e lhe mandou roupas para que ele se vestisse e pudesse entrar no palácio, mas ele não as quis aceitar.

4Esther's maids and eunuchs came and told her. The queen was stunned. She sent fresh clothes to Mordecai so he could take off his sackcloth but he wouldn't accept them.

5Então Ester chamou Hatá e lhe disse que fosse saber o que tinha acontecido e porque é que Mardoqueu estava tão perturbado. Hatá era um dos eunucos do rei que tinha sido escolhido para ajudar a rainha.

5Esther called for Hathach, one of the royal eunuchs whom the king had assigned to wait on her, and told him to go to Mordecai and get the full story of what was happening.

6Hatá saiu e foi falar com Mardoqueu na praça que ficava em frente do palácio real.

6So Hathach went to Mordecai in the town square in front of the King's Gate.

7Mardoqueu lhe contou tudo o que tinha acontecido. Até lhe disse a quantia de dinheiro que Hamã tinha prometido dar ao tesouro do rei para que o rei lhe permitisse matar os judeus.

7Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him. He also told him the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to deposit in the royal bank to finance the massacre of the Jews.

8Mardoqueu também entregou a Hatá uma cópia da ordem do rei contra os judeus e explicou que tinha sido escrita e anunciada em toda a cidade de Susã. Ele queria que Hatá mostrasse a ordem a Ester e que lhe contasse tudo o que tinha acontecido. E lhe ordenou que fosse falar com o rei para pedir que ele tivesse compaixão de Mardoqueu e do seu povo.

8Mordecai also gave him a copy of the bulletin that had been posted in Susa ordering the massacre so he could show it to Esther when he reported back with instructions to go to the king and intercede and plead with him for her people.

9Hatá voltou e contou a Ester tudo o que Mardoqueu tinha lhe dito.

9Hathach came back and told Esther everything Mordecai had said.

10Então ela pediu a Hatá que desse a seguinte mensagem a Mardoqueu:

10Esther talked it over with Hathach and then sent him back to Mordecai with this message:

11“Todos os oficiais do rei e todos os povos das províncias sabem que há uma lei que é válida para todos, homens ou mulheres. Essa lei diz que a pessoa que se apresentar diante do rei sem ter sido chamada será morta. Quem desobedecer a essa lei, só poderá se salvar se o rei estender o seu cetro de ouro sobre ela. Infelizmente já faz trinta dias que não sou chamada à presença do rei”.

11"Everyone who works for the king here, and even the people out in the provinces, knows that there is a single fate for every man or woman who approaches the king without being invited: death. The one exception is if the king extends his gold scepter; then he or she may live. And it's been thirty days now since I've been invited to come to the king."

12Mardoqueu recebeu a mensagem de Ester

12When Hathach told Mordecai what Esther had said,

13e mandou lhe dizer: “Não pense que você vai ser a única judia a se salvar pelo fato de viver no palácio do rei.

13Mordecai sent her this message: "Don't think that just because you live in the king's house you're the one Jew who will get out of this alive.

14Pois se ficar calada agora, a ajuda e a libertação dos judeus virá de outro lugar, mas você e a sua família serão mortos. Quem sabe, se não foi por causa deste momento que foi eleita rainha”.

14If you persist in staying silent at a time like this, help and deliverance will arrive for the Jews from someplace else; but you and your family will be wiped out. Who knows? Maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this."

15Então Ester mandou esta resposta:

15Esther sent back her answer to Mordecai:

16“Mardoqueu, junte todos os judeus de Susã e peça a eles que jejuem por mim. Não comam nem bebam nada durante três dias e três noites. Eu e as minhas servas iremos também jejuar. Depois de jejuarmos, irei falar com o rei. Sei que isso é contra a lei, mas mesmo assim vou fazê-lo; e se eu tiver que morrer, morrerei!”

16"Go and get all the Jews living in Susa together. Fast for me. Don't eat or drink for three days, either day or night. I and my maids will fast with you. If you will do this, I'll go to the king, even though it's forbidden. If I die, I die."

17Assim, Mardoqueu foi embora e fez o que Ester tinha lhe pedido.

17Mordecai left and carried out Esther's instructions.
