1“Fiz uma aliança com os meus olhos: nunca iria cobiçar uma jovem.

1"I have made a covenant (agreement) with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?

2Que recompensa nos dá o Deus do céu? Que herança é que o Todo-Poderoso nos manda?

2"For what is the portion I would have from God above, And what heritage from the Almighty on high?

3Ele manda a ruína para o criminoso e a desgraça para quem faz o mal.

3"Does not tragedy fall on the unjust And disaster to those who work wickedness?

4Deus sabe tudo o que eu faço e vê cada passo que dou.

4"Does not God see my ways And count all my steps?

5“Nunca menti a ninguém, e nunca tentei enganar as pessoas.

5"If I have walked with falsehood, Or if my foot has chased after deceit,

6Que Deus me pese numa balança justa e verá que sou inocente.

6Oh, let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.

7Se os meus pés se desviaram do caminho, se os meus olhos me fizeram pecar, ou se me deixei levar pela cobiça,

7"If my step has turned away from the way , Or if my heart has followed my eyes, Or if any spot has stained my hands,

8que eu plante e outros comam, ou que as minhas colheitas sejam destruídas.

8Then let me plant and another eat , And let my crops be uprooted and ruined.

9“Se me deixei seduzir por uma mulher ou se fiquei à espera de pecar com a mulher do meu vizinho,

9"If my heart has been enticed and I was made a fool by a woman, Or if I have lurked at my neighbor's door ,

10então que a minha esposa cozinhe para outro homem, e que outros homens se deitem com ela.

10Let my wife grind for another , And let others kneel down over her.

11Seria vergonhoso me deixar seduzir, e um crime me deitar com a mulher do meu vizinho.

11"For adultery is a heinous and lustful crime; Moreover, it would be a sin punishable by the judges.

12Esses pecados são como o fogo que consome até a destruição, que consumiria tudo o que tenho.

12"For it is a fire which consumes to Abaddon (destruction, ruin, final torment); And would burn and rage and uproot all my increase .

13“Quando os meus escravos e as minhas escravas se queixavam de mim, eu sempre fui justo com eles.

13"If I have despised and rejected the claim of my male or female servants When they filed a complaint against me,

14Se não fosse assim, o que eu faria quando estivesse diante de Deus? Que resposta lhe daria quando ele me julgasse?

14What then could I do when God arises ? When He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?

15Pois quem me criou no ventre da minha mãe também criou a eles, foi o mesmo Deus que deu vida tanto a eles como a mim, mesmo antes de termos nascido.

15"Did not He who made me in the womb make my servant, And did not the same One fashion us both in the womb?

16“Nunca recusei ajudar os pobres nem deixei que as viúvas passassem fome.

16"If I have withheld from the poor what they desired, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to look in vain ,

17Nunca fui egoísta com a minha comida, sempre a compartilhei com os órfãos,

17Or have eaten my morsel alone, And did not share it with the orphan

18fui como um pai para eles desde a minha juventude e tenho cuidado das viúvas durante toda a minha vida.

18(But from my youth the orphan grew up with me as with a father, And from my mother's womb I have been the widow's guide),

19Quando vi alguém sofrendo por não ter roupa, ou um pobre sem cobertor,

19If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or any poor person without covering,

20ofereci roupa para ele se vestir, usei a lã das minhas próprias ovelhas para cobri-lo. E o pobre me abençoou pelo que fiz.

20If his loins have not thanked and blessed me , And if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep,

21Nunca maltratei um órfão aproveitando da minha influência no tribunal.

21If I have lifted my hand against the orphan, Because I saw my help at the gate,

22Se fiz alguma dessas coisas, que o meu braço se desprenda do seu lugar e seja arrancado do meu ombro.

22Then let my shoulder fall away from its socket, And my arm be broken off at the elbow.

23Porque o que mais temo é o castigo de Deus, e não sou capaz de estar diante da sua glória.

23"For tragedy from God is a terror to me, And because of His majesty and exaltation I can do nothing .

24“Nunca coloquei a minha confiança nas riquezas, nem disse ao ouro: ‘Você é a minha garantia’.

24"If I have put my trust and confidence in gold, Or have declared fine gold my hope and assurance,

25Nunca me orgulhei das minhas riquezas, nem das coisas que tinha.

25If I gloated and rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had obtained so much,

26Observei o esplendor do sol e a beleza da lua no seu andar,

26If I beheld the sun when it shone Or the moon going in its splendor,

27mas não me deixei seduzir por eles, nunca os adorei.

27And my heart became secretly enticed , And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth ,

28Isso sim seria um crime digno de castigo porque teria sido infiel ao Deus do céu.

28This also would have been sin calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.

29Nunca me alegrei da desgraça dos meus inimigos, nem senti prazer com os seus sofrimentos.

29"Have I rejoiced at the destruction of the enemy , Or exulted when evil overtook him?

30Nunca deixei a minha boca falar mal dos meus inimigos nem desejar a morte deles.

30"No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By cursing my enemy and asking for his life.

31Os empregados da minha casa diziam: ‘Não há ninguém que não fique satisfeito com a porção de carne que recebe de Jó’.

31"I assure you, the men of my tent have said, 'Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat'?

32Nenhum estrangeiro tinha que dormir na rua, a minha porta estava sempre aberta para o viajante.

32"The stranger has not lodged in the street, Because I have opened my door to the traveler.

33Nunca tentei ocultar o meu pecado como fazem algumas pessoas, nem escondi os meus pecados no meu coração.

33"Have I concealed my transgressions like Adam or like other men, By hiding my wickedness in my bosom,

34Nunca fiquei calado dentro de casa por medo do que a multidão poderia pensar, ou com receio do desprezo da minha família.

34Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence and did not acknowledge my sin and did not go out of the door?

35“Não haverá ninguém que me ouça? Coloco a minha assinatura em tudo o que eu disse. Que o Todo-Poderoso me responda; que o meu adversário escreva as suas acusações num documento.

35"Oh, that I had one to listen to me! Look, here is my signature (mark); Let the Almighty answer me! Let my adversary write out His indictment .

36Levaria esse documento nos ombros; e o usaria na cabeça como uma coroa.

36"Surely I would bear it on my shoulder, And bind the scroll around my head like a crown.

37Haveria de informá-lo sobre tudo o que tenho feito; teria que me aproximar dele como um príncipe.

37"I would count out to Him the number of my steps , Approaching His presence as if I were a prince.

38“A minha terra nunca gritou pelo mal que fiz, nem os seus sulcos choraram,

38"For if my land has cried out against me, And its furrows weep together;

39pois sempre paguei aos trabalhadores pelos produtos dos meus campos, não os deixei morrer de fome.

39If I have eaten its fruits without paying for them, Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,

40Se fiz algum desses males, então que nos meus campos cresçam espinhos e ervas em vez de trigo e cevada”. Aqui terminam as palavras de Jó.

40Let thorns grow instead of wheat, And stinkweed and cockleburs instead of barley." So the words of Job are finished.
