2Pe 22 Pedro
WEB
1This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;
MSG
1My dear friends, this is now the second time I've written to you, both letters reminders to hold your minds in a state of undistracted attention.
WEB
2that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:
MSG
2Keep in mind what the holy prophets said, and the command of our Master and Savior that was passed on by your apostles.
WEB
3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts,
MSG
3First off, you need to know that in the last days, mockers are going to have a heyday. Reducing everything to the level of their puny feelings,
WEB
4and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
MSG
4they'll mock, "So what's happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything's going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing's changed."
WEB
5For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God;
MSG
5They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God's word.
WEB
6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
MSG
6Then God's word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world.
WEB
7But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
MSG
7The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics.
WEB
8But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
MSG
8Don't overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day.
WEB
9The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
MSG
9God isn't late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn't want anyone lost. He's giving everyone space and time to change.
WEB
10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
MSG
10But when the Day of God's Judgment does come, it will be unannounced, like a thief. The sky will collapse with a thunderous bang, everything disintegrating in a huge conflagration, earth and all its works exposed to the scrutiny of Judgment.
WEB
11Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,
MSG
11Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life?
WEB
12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
MSG
12Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day—
WEB
13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
MSG
13but we'll hardly notice. We'll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness.
WEB
14Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight.
MSG
14So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace.
WEB
15Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you;
MSG
15Interpret our Master's patient restraint for what it is: salvation. Our good brother Paul, who was given much wisdom in these matters,
WEB
16as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
MSG
16refers to this in all his letters, and has written you essentially the same thing. Some things Paul writes are difficult to understand. Irresponsible people who don't know what they are talking about twist them every which way. They do it to the rest of the Scriptures, too, destroying themselves as they do it.
WEB
17You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.
MSG
17But you, friends, are well-warned. Be on guard lest you lose your footing and get swept off your feet by these lawless and loose-talking teachers.
WEB
18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
MSG
18Grow in grace and understanding of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. Glory to the Master, now and forever! Yes!
