1Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.
MSG
1Jesus then left the Temple. As he walked away, his disciples pointed out how very impressive the Temple architecture was.

2But he answered them, “You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.”

2Jesus said, "You're not impressed by all this sheer size, are you? The truth of the matter is that there's not a stone in that building that is not going to end up in a pile of rubble."

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”

3Later as he was sitting on Mount Olives, his disciples approached and asked him, "Tell us, when are these things going to happen? What will be the sign of your coming, that the time's up?"

4Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray.

4Jesus said, "Watch out for doomsday deceivers.

5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray.

5Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities, claiming, 'I am Christ, the Messiah.' They will deceive a lot of people.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet.
MSG
6When reports come in of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don't panic. This is routine history; this is no sign of the end.

7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places.

7Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Famines and earthquakes will occur in various places.

8But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

8This is nothing compared to what is coming.
WEB
9Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake.

9"They are going to throw you to the wolves and kill you, everyone hating you because you carry my name.

10Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another.
MSG
10And then, going from bad to worse, it will be dog-eat-dog, everyone at each other's throat, everyone hating each other.

11Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray.
MSG
11"In the confusion, lying preachers will come forward and deceive a lot of people.
WEB
12Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.
MSG
12For many others, the overwhelming spread of evil will do them in—nothing left of their love but a mound of ashes.

13But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.
MSG
13"Staying with it—that's what God requires. Stay with it to the end. You won't be sorry, and you'll be saved.

14This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

14All during this time, the good news—the Message of the kingdom—will be preached all over the world, a witness staked out in every country. And then the end will come.

15“When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

15"But be ready to run for it when you see the monster of desecration set up in the Temple sanctuary. The prophet Daniel described this. If you've read Daniel, you'll know what I'm talking about.

16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

16If you're living in Judea at the time, run for the hills;

17Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house.
MSG
17if you're working in the yard, don't return to the house to get anything;
WEB
18Let him who is in the field not return back to get his clothes.
MSG
18if you're out in the field, don't go back and get your coat.
WEB
19But woe to those who are with child and to nursing mothers in those days!
MSG
19Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard.

20Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath,
MSG
20Hope and pray this won't happen during the winter or on a Sabbath.

21for then there will be great oppression, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be.

21"This is going to be trouble on a scale beyond what the world has ever seen, or will see again.
WEB
22Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.
MSG
22If these days of trouble were left to run their course, nobody would make it. But on account of God's chosen people, the trouble will be cut short.

23“Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it.
MSG
23"If anyone tries to flag you down, calling out, 'Here's the Messiah!' or points, 'There he is!' don't fall for it.
WEB
24For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.
MSG
24Fake Messiahs and lying preachers are going to pop up everywhere. Their impressive credentials and dazzling performances will pull the wool over the eyes of even those who ought to know better.

25“Behold, I have told you beforehand.
MSG
25But I've given you fair warning.
WEB
26If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it.

26"So if they say, 'Run to the country and see him arrive!' or, 'Quick, get downtown, see him come!' don't give them the time of day.
WEB
27For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
MSG
27The Arrival of the Son of Man isn't something you go to see. He comes like swift lightning to you!
WEB
28For wherever the carcass is, there is where the vultures gather together.
MSG
28Whenever you see crowds gathering, think of carrion vultures circling, moving in, hovering over a rotting carcass. You can be quite sure that it's not the living Son of Man pulling in those crowds.

29But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;

29"Following those hard times, Sun will fade out, moon cloud over, Stars fall out of the sky, cosmic powers tremble.

30and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

30"Then, the Arrival of the Son of Man! It will fill the skies—no one will miss it. Unready people all over the world, outsiders to the splendor and power, will raise a huge lament as they watch the Son of Man blazing out of heaven.

31He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

31At that same moment, he'll dispatch his angels with a trumpet-blast summons, pulling in God's chosen from the four winds, from pole to pole.

32“Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near.

32"Take a lesson from the fig tree. From the moment you notice its buds form, the merest hint of green, you know summer's just around the corner.

33Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
MSG
33So it is with you: When you see all these things, you'll know he's at the door.

34Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished.

34Don't take this lightly. I'm not just saying this for some future generation, but for all of you. This age continues until all these things take place.

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
MSG
35Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out.
WEB
36But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

36"But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven's angels, not even the Son. Only the Father knows.

37“As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
MSG
37"The Arrival of the Son of Man will take place in times like Noah's.

38For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship,

38Before the great flood everyone was carrying on as usual, having a good time right up to the day Noah boarded the ark.

39and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

39They knew nothing—until the flood hit and swept everything away. "The Son of Man's Arrival will be like that:

40Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left;

40Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind;

41two women grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one will be left.

42Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.

42So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your Master will show up.

43But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

43But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in.

44Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come.
MSG
44Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up.

45“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season?
MSG
45"Who here qualifies for the job of overseeing the kitchen? A person the Master can depend on to feed the workers on time each day.

46Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes.
MSG
46Someone the Master can drop in on unannounced and always find him doing his job. A God-blessed man or woman, I tell you.

47Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has.
MSG
47It won't be long before the Master will put this person in charge of the whole operation.
WEB
48But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’
MSG
48"But if that person only looks out for himself, and the minute the Master is away does what he pleases—

49and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards,
MSG
49abusing the help and throwing drunken parties for his friends—
WEB
50the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it,
MSG
50the Master is going to show up when he least expects it
WEB
51and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

51and make hash of him. He'll end up in the dump with the hypocrites, out in the cold shivering, teeth chattering.
